The Expanse: Episode 5 – How to Save Rayen and Get His Full Ending

The Expanse Episode 5

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a new episodic adventure series from a reformed version of Telltale Games and Deck Nine (the team behind Life is Strange: Before the Storm and True Colors). Like the Telltale series of old this one largely focuses on story and player choice, which also means consequences, including characters dying. That said, with the right choices, you can largely avoid bad results for your team.

Note: The following article includes SPOILERS for The Expanse: A Telltale Series.

The final chapter of The Expanse recently dropped, and as you’d expect, it includes some big life-or-death choices. One of the characters that may live or die is Rayen. He also has a “good” ending that sees him stand up to his mutinous brother, provided you’ve done certain things throughout the course of the series. So, here’s how to make sure Rayen doesn’t die and see his storyline through to the end…

How to Save Rayen’s Life

This one is pretty easy, as it’s you who potentially kills Rayen. Near the beginning of Chapter 5 the space pirate Tor will command you to kill Rayen, and you have the option to gruesomely stomp Rayen’s head with your gravity boots or fight back against Tor. If you fight back, Rayen lives – easy peasy.

How to Get Rayen’s Full Ending

  • Step 1 - In order to get Rayen’s full ending where he stands up to his brother, you need to have sided with him in early chapters, doing “nice” things like saving his leg in Chapter 1 and acquiring “medicine” for him in Chapter 2. This will lead to Rayen saving Maya in Chapter 3 (here’s our guide on that) which also seems to be a pre-requisite.
  • Step 2 – You’ll need to calm down the ship’s medic Virgil so he can heal Rayen enough to participate in the final scene. First, you’ll need to have earned Virgil’s trust by learning about his past in Episode 3 (here’s our guide on how to do that). If you’ve done that and don’t kill Rayen, you’ll enter into another conversation about Virgil’s past and have to choose certain dialogue options in order to keep him from having a panic attack. When the conversation starts, choose to “Stay With Him,” then choose the “Things are bad, but you’ve been through worse” dialogue option. When he asks what you think he’s afraid of, the response doesn’t actually matter, but you need to assure him “You can go back to being our medic.” Finally, when he asks for forgiveness, select “Not mine to give.” This should calm Virgil down and ensure he’s useful for the rest of the chapter.

And there you have it, another crew member saved – good work Captain!

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is being released on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5. You can check out Wccftech's other The Expanse guides here.
