Call of Duty 2020 Will Be Black Ops 5, Its Development Led by Treyarch Instead of Sledgehammer and Raven

Call of Duty fans are very eager to learn more about 2019’s game, which hasn’t been announced (or even teased) yet by Activision but should be a new Modern Warfare game made by Infinity Ward.

However, this rumor is actually focused on next year’s Call of Duty game, due to launch around November 2020 and likely to be cross-generation given the predicted Fall 2020 launch date of both next-gen PlayStation and Xbox platforms.

According to a report published yesterday by Kotaku, there have been some major changes with regards to this project within Activision. The development of 2020’s Call of Duty was going to be led by Raven Software who would be assisted by Sledgehammer Games, in a reversal of roles of what happened with 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII.

The game was meant to be set in the Cold War era, possibly in Vietnam, according to Kotaku’s anonymous inside sources. However, this changed recently as the project itself wasn’t going well, reportedly due to tensions and disagreements between Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games. Now, both studios will serve as support to Treyarch, who will accelerate their usual three-year rotation and release Call of Duty: Black Ops 5 in 2020 instead of 2021. Unlike last year’s Black Ops 4, though, there’ll be a story campaign this time around, even if it will have to be reconfigured from what Raven and Sledgehammer were initially doing.

Perhaps the most fragile position seems to be that of Sledgehammer Games, now demoted to an assist studio. You might recall that its founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield, who directed the highly successful Call of Duty: WWII, left the company a while ago. Kotaku’s report goes on to state that the Californian studio has lost several developers recently, many of which have joined Condrey in his new endeavor at 2K Games.
