ATX 3.0 PSU Tour: New Designs From Enermax & XPG For Your Latest PC Builds 1

The ATX 3.0 PSU standard has been here since last year and while PCI-SIG has released the new ATX 3.1 specifications, the good thing is that they will be compatible with the existing designs. As such, we thought about giving you a tour of two brand-new ATX 3.0 PSUs from Enermax and XPG that we recently got our hands on and might just be a perfect build for your new PC. Enermax Revolution D.F.X 1050W 80 Plus Gold PSU Specifications

So starting with our first unit, we have got the Enermax Revolution D.F.X 1050W 80 Plus Gold unit which is an 80+ Gold design with a power rating that should be more than enough for today's high-end PC components. It's a fully modular design like the rest of the Hydro series units we tested and comes in the standard 140x150mm form factor with a hint of RGB.

Coming to the specifications, the Enermax Revolution D.F.X 1050W 80 Plus Gold unit we got offers a maximum DC output of 1050 Watts. It's an 80 PLUS Gold unit with efficiency rated at greater than or over 87% at 100% load. The PSU is fully compliant with Intel's C6 & C7 power states and has an operating temp of up to 40C. The PSU has an input voltage of 100-240V and an input current rating of 13-6.5A.

According to Enermax, the D.F.X ATX 3.0 PSUs come with less than 200ms power-on time and can sustain 200% power excursions on the latest hardware. That's a 1200W power excursion when taking into account up to 600W designs for some RTX 4090 GPUs but we have seen in reality that the card doesn't hit power spikes that high and mostly averages around 400-450W in gaming workloads.

The cooling is provided by a top-mounted dust-free rotation fan which measures 120mm. The fan comes with a high-pressure blade design and also offers a semi-fanless mode where the fan will only spin if the PSU load exceeds 20% or goes over temperature. There's also a 6-pole motor inside the fans with 3 phases that provide minimal vibration for silent operation.

Enermax Revolution D.F.X 1050W 80 Plus Gold PSU Unboxing & Close Up

The unit we received comes in a large red and black colored package with a picture of the PSU on the front. The front also lists several features such as the 80 Plus Gold Rating, PCIe 5.0-Ready, ATX 3.0 Ready and the use of 100% Japanese Capacitors.

The back side also offers a list of features which we have detailed above. You can see the various cables and connectors that come with the package along with its specifications.

Within the package, the PSU unit is held between foam packaging to protect it during shipping while the cables are supplied in their own separate pouch. There are also four screws supplied with the PSU for installation within your casing.

One of the more interesting accessories within the package is this right-angled connector that can be plugged into the 24-pin cable, allowing for easier installation to the motherboard.

The PSU itself is packaged in a plastic cover.

This is a 140mm chassis which makes it really small and easier to manage within crammed-up PC cases. The exact dimensions of the PSU are 140x150x86mm.

On the back, you can see the power plug, the power switch, the RGB control button, and a large mesh panel that acts as an exhaust vent.

Now depending on how you use the PSU, the bottom panel reads the specifications and power ratings. The PSU is rated to output a maximum of 87.5A and 1050W through the 12V rails.

The sides of the PSU come with an ARGB side panel which works with all the latest RGB software solutions from various vendors including Enermax's own. You can select from 14 built-in lightning modes or customize using ARGB.

Coming to the connectors, there are 1 PCIe 12+4 (12VHPWR), five PCI-e 6+2-pin connectors, an ATX 24-pin (14+10 pin) connector, four 4-pin Molex connectors and a single RGB sync header.

The cables within the packaging pouch include the ATX 20+4 pin, a Gen5 connector, two 8-pin CPU connectors, 4 PCIe 8-pin connectors, 6 Molex connectors, 12 SATA connectors, and a single FDD connector..

Lastly, we have the dust-free rotation fan which comes with the high-pressure blade design and a semi-fanless function.

XPG Core Reactor II 850W 80 Plus Gold PSU Specifications

The second unit we have with us today is the ADATA XPG Core Reactor II 850W which is another 80 Plus Gold-rated PSU that delivers up to 87% efficiency when running at full load. It also comes in a fully modular design and is both Cybernetics LAMBDA / ETA certified with ratings of Platinum and A-, respectively.

Coming to the specifications, the XPG Core Reactor II 850W 80 Plus Gold PSU offers a maximum DC output of 850 Watts and an active PFC. The PSU is fully compliant with Intel's C6 & C7 power states and has an operating temp of 0-50C while the Japanese bulk capacitors are rated at up to 450V & 105C. The PSU is fully IEC/EN 62638 certified. The whole unit weighs at 1.45kg.

The XPG Core Reactor II comes in a large red-colored package with a picture of the PSU on the front along with the XPG brand ambassador, Mera (an anime character).

Opening the package reveals the PSU itself, along with a pouch that includes all the cables and connectors, and case stickers.

Impressions

Both Enermax and XPG have some nice ATX 3.0 PSU offerings out now which are available in various wattage options. With prices of $124.99 US for the XPG Core Reactor II 850W & $179.99 US for the Enermax D.F.X 1050W, these two are decent options for your new PC builds which feature a 10-year warranty. Knowing that PSU is one component in PC builds that generally lasts the longest without the need to upgrade, it's better to invest in something that will stick with you for a couple of years.

The ATX 3.0 standard may not be a requirement now but considering where things are headed with power usage, it's better to invest in something that's more future-proof.
