Prices for laptops featuring NVIDIA's mainstream GeForce RTX 4060 GPU have started to appear in China & they don't look that consumer-friendly.
Want An NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 GPU-Powered Laptop? You Have To Pay Much More Than The Last-Gen
We have seen an increase in prices on both desktop and laptop components. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 graphics cards are some of the largest generational price bumps we have seen to date & it looks like the RTX 40 Laptop GPUs are going to follow suit. The high-end RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 GPUs for laptops are already insanely priced with starting prices of over $2000 US and up to $6000 US on some configurations.
Based on information from retailers which was acquired by a Chinese notebook reviewer (via My Drivers), it looks like the mainstream lineup will carry similar price increases. It is reported that the GeForce RTX 4060 laptop pre-orders will start between the 7999-8999 RMB range which is $1200 - $1300 US. But these prices aren't for the best options but rather the base tier models. The higher-end models featuring the same GPU will start at pre-order prices of around 8999-9999 RMB or up to $1500 US.
This is much higher than what most users paid for their NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 laptops. So if the pre-order prices are anything to go by, we are looking at a lower-tier GPU replacing the higher-tier laptop chip at similar or higher prices. It almost looks like the $999 US introductory prices for RTX 40 series laptops will only be a few RTX 4050 models which is also a high price to pay for an AD107 GPU. There's a good chance we might get RTX 4070 laptops closing in on the $2000 US price mark.
The pricing also makes it seem like NVIDIA is fully confident in the capabilities of its entry-tier and mainstream RTX 40 GPUs. Unlike the high-end segment which has been abandoned by AMD (RTX 4090 / RTX 4080), the mainstream segment saw several RDNA 3 GPU announcements in the form of RX 7700 and RX 7600 series so it will be an interesting comparison for sure. These RDNA 3 chips are expected within the first half of 2023 meanwhile NVIDIA's solutions will be readily available on the 22nd of February.
