AMD Commands 30%+ of CPU Market Share For 1st Time in 12 Years According to Latest CPUBenchmark Data

AMD Ryzen and Intel Core CPU Market Share_3

It has been one hell of a ride for AMD ever since the company introduced its wildly successful Zen CPU microarchitecture back in 2017.  The underdog chipmaker now commands no less than 30% of CPU market share, as of the end of Q3 2019, according to the latest market share data from cpubenchmark.

This represents a whopping ~70% growth for the company since the introduction of its Ryzen family of processors back in early 2017.  The first and second generation Zen based products, including Ryzen, Ryzen Pro, Ryzen Threadripper and EPYC, helped put AMD back on the map and grow the company’s market share meaningfully for the very first time  in nearly half a decade.

AMD Takes Third of Global Share, Undoes 12 Years of Intel's CPU Market Hold In Just Two Years

The company managed to claw share back from Intel and overall grow its share slowly and steadily from 18% all the way to 23% up to the second quarter of this year, the data shows. However with the help of Zen 2 and 3rd generation Ryzen products, AMD was able to outdo that two year growth in a single quarter! Now the company commands roughly a third of the CPU market for the first time in more than 12 years, which should put into context how truly market-changing this feat AMD has accomplished is.

AMD's 3rd Gen Ryzen Continues to Crush it in the DIY Hardware Channel - Outsells Intel 4 to 1

It's very important to point out that the cpubenchmark.net database tracks CPUs in use rather than CPUs sold, making it a much heavier needle to move than other indicators. However, once you understand that about the data from cpubenchmark you will find that it is highly consistent with what we’ve been seeing over the past several months. All of AMD’s high-end 3rd generation Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 processors are consistently sold-out across every major retailer we’ve seen in North America and Europe. In fact, latest data from Germany’s largest retailer shows AMD outselling Intel CPUs 4 to 1.

AMD has also just released two new Ryzen processors, the Ryzen 9 3900 and Ryzen 5 3500X and is expected to launch the highly anticipated 16 core Ryzen 9 3950X next month, alongside its entirely new lineup of 3rd generation Threadripper processors based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. Excitement around new products combined with the holiday season could see AMD take even more share from Intel. We don't expect big blue to stand still however, this could mean some pretty insane price wars are coming our way. Which would be a gift to every PC enthusiast.
