The camera quality of Android phones has improved dramatically in recent years. This is evident when looking at the smartphone rankings on DxOMark. DxOMark is a website that provides quality ratings for smartphone cameras. They are generally a well-respected source for this information and they just published their review of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Spoiler alert: It performed very well.
Huawei phones have generally fared very well on DxOMark’s rankings lately. The Huawei P20 Pro was sitting alone atop the rankings with a score of 109. Now, there are two devices at the top. DxOMark rated the Huawei Mate 20 Pro with the same 109 score, placing both Huawei phones firmly at the top. The iPhone XS Max is in second place with a score of 105. Other phones of note include the Pixel 3 at 101 and the Galaxy Note 9 and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 tied at 103.
The score of 109 is an average between the 114 photo score and 97 video score. DxOMark breaks down the scores by the different features. The Mate 20 Pro did very well in exposure, color, autofocus, and flash. This translated to both photo and video results. Having three rear cameras would seem to be a huge advantage, but the score didn’t take the wide-angle camera into account. However, the secondary telephoto camera helped the zoom score to be one of the best.
DxOMark scores are certainly not the final word on a smartphone’s camera quality. Some people don’t think the scores can accurately represent camera quality, especially when comparing very different setups among phones. In the case of the Mate 20 Pro, DxOMark is just another outlet praising the cameras. What do you think of this review?
