Apple may end up using a high frequency display for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, but a previous rumor claimed that there might still be some differences between those future panels and the ones found on the ‘Pro’ versions. Fortunately, after some clarification, an update to that rumor is that BOE may end up supplying LTPO 120Hz ProMotion displays for the two models, but as you may have heard on previous occasions, the manufacturer does not have the best track record for maintaining consistent quality.
LTPO OLED costs may come down in 2024, allowing BOE to supply high refresh rate displays for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus
Majin Bu posted the original rumor on X, but at the time, he had not been in contact with DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants) founder and CEO Ross Young, who has a phenomenal track record on anything related to displays. A private conversation between the two suggests that there is the possibility of LTPO OLED technology debuting on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, but that is if BOE is able to maintain the quality that Apple demands.
Just a few days ago, it was reported that BOE lost iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus display orders to Samsung for being unable to match Apple’s high-quality standards, and that is for LTPS panels. LTPO OLED screens are costlier and more complicated to produce, and based on BOE’s history, the Chinese manufacturer has a mountain to climb in securing orders from Apple. However, Ross Young states that LTPO’s manufacturing costs may come down next year, making it easier for Apple to use them on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
The display analyst earlier stated that Apple’s original plan was to bring LTPO ProMotion displays to all iPhone 17 models in 2025, removing the exclusivity barrier from the ‘Pro’ models in a couple of years. Then again, these plans can change from early 2024 based on various factors, including BOE’s ability to keep up with quality and quantity.
