A report published by WGN9 highlights that a hidden AirTag was used to arrest two robbers who stole $1.1 million from an armored truck. The AirTag was found hidden in one of the plastic bins that carried the money. Potentially, the accessory was placed in the money bins by the asset owner. The robbers took ten bags worth $50,000 each and seven bags worth $100,000 each.
Little did the robbers know one of the bags had a hidden AirTag which would constantly update the owner with the location. The AirTag witnesses the entire route and it helped authorities locate the destination of the stolen money. The robbers spun around town before reaching the suspect's address. When authorities connected the dots through the information provided by the AirTag and traffic signals, it allowed them to reach the final destination of the stolen money.
The police recovered the stolen $1.1 million which was found in the basement and in the ceiling of the house. While the intended purpose of the AirTag is not to locate thieves and robbers, it did come in handy in this scenario. It is not clear if the owner intentionally placed an AirTag or hid it by mistake.
