Resident Evil: Death Island Trailer Offers First Leon-Jill Team-Up, Zombie Sharks, and More

Resident Evil Death Island

While not as popular as the games or live-action films, Capcom has stubbornly stuck to their guns, releasing a steady stream of direct-to-video animated Resident Evil flicks (and a Netflix series) since the  late 2000s. Most of these movies aren’t exactly great, but they offer a certain brand of cheesy fun and expand the Resident Evil lore in sometimes interesting ways. Enter the latest of these animated movies, Resident Evil : Death Island, which relocates the zombie-killing action to the infamous island prison Alcatraz. Capcom has dropped the first trailer for Death Island, which you can check out below (it's technically for the Japanese market, but the dialogue is entirely in English, so you’ll have no trouble following what’s going on).

Well, that was a lot! It seems like Capcom’s swinging for the fences with this one, with pretty much the entire core cast of classic Resident Evil characters taking part. That means we see some unusual pairings, including Leon and Jill, who have never actually shared screen time in a canon RE story before. We also get to see Chris and Claire team up, Rebecca return with a new look, fast zombies, undead sharks, and more. Honestly, I’m a little sad a setting as great as Alcatraz island is being used for one of these movies instead of a game, but still, this looks like goofy fun. Need to know more? Here’s an official description

“D.S.O. agent Leon S. Kennedy is on a mission to rescue Dr. Antonio Taylor from kidnappers, when a mysterious woman thwarts his pursuit. Meanwhile, B.S.A.A. agent Chris Redfield is investigating a zombie outbreak in San Francisco, where the cause of the infection cannot be identified. The only thing the victims have in common is that they all visited Alcatraz Island recently. Following that clue, Chris and his team head to the island, where a new horror awaits them.”

Resident Evil: Death Island launches on July 7 in Japan. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release the movie worldwide sometime after that. What do you think? Will you be watching or have you given up on wringing entertainment from these movies?
