AMD is letting people know why higher VRAM on GPUs is important & why it plays an important role in modern games ahead of NVIDIA's RTX 4070 launch.
AMD Says "More Memory Matters": Shows Radeon Cards With More VRAM Per Segment Ahead of NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4070 Launch
In a blog titled "Building an Enthusiast PC", AMD has shared some interesting marketing slides which mainly talk about two things, first is the ever-increasing demand for VRAM in modern AAA titles and the second is how the company is offering more memory on their Radeon cards versus the NVIDIA GeForce offerings.
The block starts off by showcasing a few game examples such as Resident Evil 4 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1, and Hogwarts Legacy running at 4K and consuming over 11 GB of memory and even more when ray tracing is enabled. While game and memory optimization is a crucial aspect of PC ports (which haven't been that great for a while now), it is stated that gamers need at least 8 GB of VRAM to play at 1080p, 12 GB for 1440p and 16 GB for 2160p optimal gaming.
We have seen that 8 GB is very much required for an optimal 1080p gaming experience and that anything above that requires 10 GB+ memory capacities. In this regard, AMD does seem to have the upper edge since their current Radeon RX 7000 and RX 6000 lineup stand well against NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 30 series offerings, except the RTX 4090 which AMD could've countered but decided not to due to power and cost constraints.
In four individual marketing slides, AMD compares its Radeon RX graphics cards against NVIDIA's GeForce RTX cards. We start off with the RTX 4080 which is compared to the RX 7900 XTX. NVIDIA has 16 GB of VRAM against 24 GB on the 7900 XTX. The RTX 4070 Ti is compared against the 7900 XT which also offers 8 GB more VRAM (12 GB vs 20 GB). The RTX 3080 10 GB is compared to the RX 6950 XT and 6900 XT. Lastly, we have the RTX 3070 Ti 8 GB compared to the RX 6800 XT 16 GB.
More importantly, AMD isn't just offering more VRAM but it is doing so at similar or lower prices. And the last comparison between the RX 6800 XT and the RTX 3070 Ti may give even the GeForce RTX 4070 a tough time.
The RX 6800 XT is said to be priced around $579 US and offers up to 39% faster performance. The Newegg listings even have some models retailing for as low as $539 US which is $60 US lower than the MSRP of the upcoming RTX 4070 graphics card.
That should more or less be competitive against the RTX 3080 and the 4070 (Non-Ti) is said to be about the same performance level. The 6800 XT will also offer 4 GB higher VRAM capacities but a big disadvantage lies within its power consumption where the Ada AD104 GPU might totally crush it.
It is more or less clear that this comparison coming a day before the launch of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 is aimed at it. Paying $600 US for a graphics card, one would at least expect to play some form of 4K games, and if AAA titles like Resident Evi 4 Remake can push up to memory usage up to 16 GB without even RT on, then that puts cards like RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 in a tough spot and these are $600+ high-end cards.
AMD does have some valid points and given the higher VRAM requirements and unoptimized nature of recent PC titles, the extra memory will be a requirement to run games at a playable framerate without facing any stutters or crashes.
