Intel has reportedly started sampling its 5th Gen Emerald Rapids and Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs as revealed in a recent document.
Intel Preps Emerald Rapids 5th Gen Xeon & Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs For Custom Sampling
According to @Fan_of_Toasters on Twitter, Intel has commenced sampling of its next-gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs and 5th Gen Emerald Rapids Xeon Server chips. A document that dates to the 21st of April has also been shared which states that the Xeon Emerald Rapids R-0 stepping is being sampled to customers to perform system testing and issue debugging. The samples will be fused as PQS and graded to ES2 standards. This means that the silicon is on-schedule for its launch later this year.
Following this tweet, YuuKi_AnS shared a picture of the first two Intel Emerald Rapids-SP CPUs. The pictured samples are also ES2 and you can see a standard package design & one with an extended PCB which could either be to allocate HBM DRAM or other controllers. These are definitely Emerald Rapids chips as seen from the capacitor layout on the back which is different from the ones we see on Sapphire Rapids chips.
We know that Intel's Emerald Rapids (5th Gen Xeon) CPU lineup is going to launch in Q4 2023 and will feature up to 64 cores and 128 threads. The CPUs will come in various die configurations and the flagship will utilize a 2-chiplet layout which is a stark contrast to the 4-chiplet layout on the 4th Gen Xeon Sapphire Rapids family. The CPUs are also expected to boast some huge amounts of L3 cache (up to 320 MB as per rumors) and will be supported by the existing LGA 4677 socket.
The most important thing mentioned by the leaker is that Intel is also sampling Meteor Lake-S CPUs. There have been various claims that Intel has canceled its Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs however, sampling it now would mean that we can still get some form of Meteor Lake chips on desktops. Intel is said to be shipping sample SKUs with sSpec numbers to OEMs and the first ES1 samples are based on the A1 stepping.
A few months ago, we reported original Meteor Lake-S plans which include various SKUs for the desktop LGA 1851 platform. The SKUs list includes:
- MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 125W TDP
- MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65W TDP
- MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35W TDP
- MTL-S 14 (6P + 8E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65WTDP
- MTL-S 14 (6P + 8E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35WTDP
It will be definitely interesting to see what comes after Intel's 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh CPU lineup for desktops and if Meteor Lake is indeed heading to the platform, then we can expect the launch in 2024.
