AMD seems to be preparing two custom Ryzen Z1 series APU based on its Phoenix design for the ASUS ROG Ally handheld console.
Benchmark Leak Shows AMD Ryzen Z1 Series In Extreme 8-Core & Non-Extreme 6 Core Flavors For ASUS ROG Ally Handheld
Yesterday, we got to see the custom AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU which is designed for the ASUS ROG Ally handheld gaming console in action. The APU is part of the Phoenix family but instead of using the Ryzen 7040 nomenclature, it gets its own designated Z1 series branding. We got to see the Extreme variant in earlier tests but based on the latest benchmarks, it looks like another SKU exists.
The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme features 8 Zen 4 cores with 16 threads, 16 MB L3 cache 8 MB L2 cache. It comes with a base clock of 3.30 GHz which boosts close to 5.1 GHz and should have a TDP in the 15-28W range. The iGPU is the Radeon 780M which features 12 RDNA 3 compute units for a total of 768 cores. These should clock above 2 GHz with ease though the Geekbench database only lists the base clock of 800 MHz.

In addition to the Z1 Extreme, there's also the standard AMD Ryzen Z1 APU which features 6 Zen 4 cores, 12 threads, 16 MB of L3 cache, 6 MB of L2 cache. This chip has a lower base and boost clock set to 3.20 GHz and 4.9 GHz, respectively. The GPU-side includes 4 RDNA 3 compute units for just 256 cores. That's 66% fewer cores than the Radeon 780M iGPU featured on the Extreme & the base clock is once again set to 800 MHz. It isn't known if this chip will be a second SKU or just for use in a prototype build of the ASUS ROG Ally handheld console.

There are reports of two variants of the ASUS ROG Ally handheld console, the RC71L & the RC71X as reported by Videocardz, though the Z1 Extreme and standard Z1 APUs from AMD appear in the RC71L variant.
ASUS said in its announcement video that the ROG Ally will make use of the fastest custom-made APU yet that was worked on by AMD & ROG. The renders make it look like a custom version of AMD Rembrandt or Phoenix APUs though that remains to be seen. Since we are talking about RDNA 3, it will support AMD's RSR and FSR capabilities while delivering up to twice the performance of Steam Deck at its full 35W TDP. Even at 15W, the ROG Ally will deliver a 50% performance boost over the Steam Deck.
ASUS also revealed that the launch of the ROG Ally handheld is sooner than we expect so stay tuned for more info.
