An AirTag was used by the federal agency for surveillance purposes - Does it work?
Forbes published a new report highlighting that the DEA used an AirTag to track packages with a pill press machine from Shanghai, China in May of last year. The machine is capable of turning powder into tablets and it was believed that it was used for illegal purposes. The DEA took notice of the scene and tracked its whereabouts by silently putting AirTags on the machine.
The search warrant, seen by Forbes, reveals how Apple's AirTags were used as a tool to uncover illegal activities by the federal agency. There is no doubt that Apple's item-tracking accessory is plenty capable of locating items almost anywhere. The report suggests that the DEA needed "precise location information" to track down the packages for investigation of other purposes. While there are GPS trackers on the market, the DEA did not specify why Apple's AirTags were used in the operation.
A detective told Forbes that the reason why DEA went ahead with the AirTags is that the GPS devices handed to police did not work at times. Henceforth, the federal agency potentially saw fit to conclude that the AirTag was a much better fit for the operation than the standard GPS trackers. There are numerous benefits that the AirTags bring to the table, such as long battery life, and lower cost, and locating the accessory is a lot easier compared to a GPS tracker.
However, using an AirTag for such an operation has certain drawbacks associated with it as well. For instance, Apple has anti-tracking measures set in place that could notify anyone if an AirTag is following them. Furthermore, a sound can also be played to know the precise location of the item-tracking accessory.
The report does not mention if using the AirTags as a location-tracking tool lead to positive outcomes in the operations. It also states that the warrant permitted the agency to track the accessory for 45 days in Massachusetts and other states.
