Apple Watch Camera Patent

There is no denying that Apple files a lot of patents. While the company spends billions of dollars on the research and development of products, it is unlikely that all of them would see daylight. Future Apple Watch models will come with a camera for Face ID, Video Calls, and Video Recording

The Apple Watch is a very capable device and decades ahead of the competition. It provides medical assistance as well as gives users the liberty to use their iPhones a lot less. Well, if Apple's latest patent ever sees daylight, users would have another reason to rely even less on their iPhones (via AppleInsider). The patent was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office with the title "Wearable electronic device having a digital camera assembly."

The patent images show a camera above the watch's face in a slightly tilted fashion. What this means is that the camera module will not sit flush with the display. Apple mentions in the patent that the camera module will be less protruding which will result in a slimmer profile. We have previously seen a third-party accessory that brings a camera to the Apple Watch for video calls as well as photography. While the functionality brought forward by Wristcam is more than a welcome addition to the Apple Watch, Apple's rendition will be seamless.

Apart from making video calls, the camera on the Apple Watch could also serve as a solution for Face ID. This would eliminate the need to input your passcode every time you take your Apple Watch off. Additionally, the company could use a sensor between 0.9MP to 12MP on the Apple Watch that can capture videos at 4K 30 to 60 fps. It would be great to see how Apple makes use of the camera sensor.

Lastly, Apple mentions in the new patent that the camera could be used for Face ID, Touch ID, scanning QR codes, photography, photos, videos, and much more. The unit can be connected to the Apple Watch's battery. According to Apple, the camera will rest in an opening of the protruded area and away from the display. This is not the first time that we are hearing details about the Apple Watch with a  camera, We have previously noted how Apple was working on an Apple Watch with a camera and a flash under the display.

While it sounds too good to be true, there are no official words suggesting that the product will be released soon. Henceforth, be sure to take the news with a grain of salt. We will update you as soon as the story develops. As for now, how badly do you want a camera setup on your Apple Watch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
