PS5 January Sales Up 3X Year-on-Year in Europe, Xbox Series X/S Sales Fall 32 Percent

PS5 PlayStation 5 System Update 22.02-06-02.00

Since launching in 2020, the PlayStation 5 spent many months beset by supply issues, often coming in second or third in monthly sales rankings despite sky-high demand for the console. Thankfully, it seems Sony has got their supply issues in check, as the PS5 has topped the NPD charts for several months, coming out the winner of the crucial holiday sales period. Sony has also come right out and said PS5 supply has increased, launching an entire ad campaign devoted to the fact.

Well, today we got details from Europe that really underlines just how much the PS5 supply situation has improved in recent months. According to GamesIndustry.biz head Christopher Dring, European PS5 sales were up 202 percent in January compared to the same month last year. In other words, PS5 sales more than tripled year-on-year. It seems this success came at least somewhat at the expense of Sony’s competitors, as European Switch sales were down 11 percent in January, and Xbox Series X/S sales were down an eyebrow-raising 32 percent.

Looking specifically at the UK, PS5 sales were up 98 percent year-on-year, with many people reportedly buying God of War Rangarok special editions. As we already reported today, the PS5 was also the #1 console in North America in January in terms of both unit and dollars sales according to the NPD Group. We don’t know how much the PS5 was up year-on-year in the Americas, but it was probably a significant amount.

It took Sony a while to figure things out, but it seems likely the console world will be their oyster from here forward. The Switch is finally starting to lose momentum and the Xbox Series X/S don’t seem to be offering much competition. Nintendo’s Switch successor might put a dent in the PS5’s sales, but until that arrives (probably not until 2024 at the earliest) Sony is going to have free reign.

What are your thoughts on the changing console scene? Have you sat out on the PS5 thus far, but plan to get one now that they’re more readily available?
