Alleged TSMC Employee Opens Up About Harsh Bullying At Company

An alleged employee of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has shared her experiences working at the company on a Taiwanese online discussion forum. TSMC is the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, and the firm holds a central place both in the Taiwanese economy and the region's politics. The firm has several manufacturing facilities, research centers and offices across the island. Today's post, however, leaves the details of the anonymous worker's work location out, and it reveals that she is facing bullying from older coworkers - some of whom have even behaved as 'hooligans' and physically bullied their younger counterparts.

TSMC Workers Will Often 'Hit' Juniors On The Head & Carry Out Other Forms Of Bullying, Alleges Report

The report, picked up initially by the United Daily News (UDN), was made on the chat board DCard. Since the original poster is anonymous and other details have been removed, it is impossible to verify the authenticity of the information. Still, responses by other DCard users indicate that this is not an isolated problem at TSMC, as some have witnessed similar behavior at other companies.

According to the details, the anonymous employee has been working at the company for six months. During this time period, her job has made her anxious, particularly due to the behavior of her supervisor. The worker alleges that not only does her supervisor not follow company policy by coming late, leaving early and driving out during working hours, but she also does not stand up for her. She states that the supervisor makes her job hard since when she completes her tasks fast, she has to explain all of her mistakes, or if she finishes them slowly,  she has to report to the supervisor immediately for the delay.

The employee is also unable to find any solutions for her problems, as, according to her, the supervisor is quite popular and has all kinds of benefits. However, her supervisor is not the only person she worries about at TSMC.

According to her, senior colleagues often hit juniors on the head, push them around or use harsh tones. At one point in time, she felt the need to tell them off for this behavior but refrained from doing so since she was worried that their tone would be harsher next time. She compares the seniors' mentality to that of hooligans.

This behavior has left the employee unable to focus on her work. She believes that her colleagues will talk without limit about her, and she is also afraid of making any mistakes at work due to her supervisor's behavior. The behavior is taking a toll on her mental health, and she has to worry about 'complex interpersonal relationships' at work as well. She is also unsure about spending her money since she is afraid that she might lose her job at any time.

In response, readers sympathized with the original poster and told her that this behavior is actually quite common in other companies as well. They add that working in cleanrooms is particularly complex (unclear whether the original poster also works at a cleanroom) since employees are not allowed to take pictures or record video - which leaves the bullies free to do what they want.

Another commentator pointed out a senior worker from TSMC's Nan-ke factory to share that he would also speak harshly to juniors, and even senior engineers would not cut him off. One reader suggested that she should report this behavior to the science and technology management bureau. Other suggestions also included beating up the senior so at least the issue would reach management and forming a group to deal with the problems collectively.
