HarmonyOS is designed by Huawei to create a shared ecosystem

After months of speculations, Huawei has finally revealed its operating system. The software will be called HarmonyOS internationally, while within China it will be known as HongMeng. As expected, the OS was announced during the Huawei Developer Conference held in Dongguan, China, and we learned an interesting bit of the company’s latest initiative that we’d like to share with you.

The HarmonyOS has more in common with Google’s Fuchsia OS than Android, in the sense that it will be easier to deploy across different devices, including smartphones, wearables, and smart speakers. Basically, it’s geared to interconnect several things at once. The microkernel-based HarmonyOS will be launched as an open source platform which will make it easier for more developers to chip in and help with its development, thereby encouraging adoption.

Since HarmonyOS can be easily scaled across different devices, developers will not have to recompile their apps for different gadgets and form factors. That being said, existing apps that work on Android will have to be recompiled. Also, the Chinese giant states that it will be possible to compile different languages into machine level code in a single environment, and although more clarity is required on this, it will presumably make it possible for more developers to create apps for the ecosystem.

Initially, Huawei’s operating system was not primarily aimed at smartphones, according to a company executive, but once Google cut off its access to Android at the behest of the U.S. government, the Chinese giant was forced to fast track its plans so that an Android alternative will be ready in case things are not settled with the Trump administration. However, the company has stressed time and again that it wishes to continue to stick with Android.

Huawei says its HarmonyOS will be released for smart screen devices later this year and later be expanded to other products. The first of those devices will presumably be the Honor TV. Moreover, the operating system will first be introduced in China before being rolled out to other markets.

Back in May, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group Richard Yu had said that the company’s OS will be ready for smartphones and notebooks by the end of 2019 in its home country of China and by the second half of 2020 for other markets. Another report had said that the operating system will first be run on entry level and mid-tier smartphones, before possibly making its way to high-end devices.
