2019 iPhone Lineup to See 12MP Front Camera Upgrades, Plus a Black Coating to Hide Lenses, Says Analyst

2019 iPhone family reportedly getting 12MP front cameras

The iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max ship with a single 7MP front-facing shooter, and Ming-Chi Kuo is out with an investor note stating that the 2019 iPhone models will be treated to upgraded 12MP sensors. This will help to churn out images with a higher resolution. Sadly, the analyst from TF International Securities also states that there aren’t going to be any changes when it comes to the display sizes, meaning we’ll have to wait until 2020 to possibly appreciate a newer iPhone design.

Rear Cameras’ Maximum Resolution Might Not Exceed 12MP, as Apple Looks to Sony to Deliver Quality Components

According to a research note obtained by MacRumors, the 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch 2019 iPhone models will feature a triple rear camera setup, most likely provided by Sony. Surprisingly, all three of them will feature a resolution of 12MP and sport a pixel size of 1um, which is ideal considering that increasing the number of megapixels for a small smartphone sensor can be detrimental for the overall image quality as it means the size of each individual pixels will decrease.

There will also be a special coating applied at the front of the super-wide-angle lens as well as front 12MP camera for the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max to make the lenses more ‘inconspicuous’. The iPhone XR successor, which some people are referring to as the iPhone 11R, is expected to feature a dual-camera at the back, although Kuo hasn’t specified the megapixel count in this regard.

If you’re interested in reading the research note, you can check it out below:

“We forecast the camera upgrade will be one of the new 2H19 iPhone’s major selling points. Critical spec upgrades are as follows. (1) Rear cameras of 6.5-inch OLED, 5.8-inch OLED, and 6.1-inch LCD will likely upgrade to triple-camera and dual-camera, respectively. A super-wide camera will be newly adopted by the triple-camera system, which is equipped with the 12MP/1um CIS provided exclusively by Sony. (2) The front camera of all three new iPhone models will likely upgrade to 12MP CIS+5P lens (vs. current 7MP CIS+4P lens).”

The 2019 iPhone models are expected to launch on September 10, according to leaked assets within iOS 13 beta 7. Shortly after the first models start shipping to customers, we’ll get to know more about the internals of these devices as well as the changes Apple implemented on the outside, and inside, so stay tuned for more details.
