Verizon CEO Believes ‘Tens of Thousands of Customers’ Will Buy Samsung’s Expensive Galaxy S10 5G

On Thursday, Samsung’s first 5G-ready phone, the Galaxy S10 5G went on sale in America. The phone is exclusive to Verizon right now, although it will be available with other carriers later on. While U.S. carriers wanting to promote 5G connectivity shows their commitment towards the wireless standard, the asking price of smartphones is through the roof. The base variant of the phone costs $1,299, while the model with twice the local storage carries a price tag of $1,399. Needless to say, this is one expensive phone, but Verizon’s CEO Hans Vestberg doesn’t seem to think that the steep price will deter people from buying the device.

According to an interview with CNBC, Vestberg thinks that the phone will provide a great experience and he said that tens of thousands of customers bought the Galaxy S10 5G on the day it went on sale. Previously, the only 5G-enabled smartphone that was available in the U.S. was the Motorola Z3, but it had to be connected to the $200 Moto Mod for 5G connectivity. The Galaxy S10 5G, on the other hand, has the 5G support built it.

“We are seeing tens of thousands of customers taking it already.”

The Galaxy S10 series has already received a positive response at the market, thanks to its multiple cameras, improved design, and nifty features such as reverse wireless charging and in-display fingerprint scanner. The 5G connectivity provided by the recently released variant is going to be the cherry on the top, but industry watchers have repeatedly warned that the speed benefits will not be witnessed this year.

Citing an Ookla speed test conducted in Chicago, Verizon said the Galaxy S10 5G can reach 1.4 Gigabits per second on its network, although as most media outlets have pointed out, the smartphone currently tops out at around 1Gbps. The network is still being built out and connectivity remains limited, but as the infrastructure develops, the speed will likely increase and provide more reliability in the future. For now, even 1Gbps is a lot more than what the 4G is able to attain.

Currently, Verizon’s 5G network has only gone live in Chicago and Minneapolis but the company plans to roll it out to 20 more cities in the U.S. by the end of 2019. The carrier will launch three more phones with 5G connectivity this year.
