Tencent & Riot Games Reportedly Working League of Legends Mobile

Riot Games is best known for its free-to-play MOBA League of Legends. On several occasions, the title was the most viewed game on Twitch and other streaming platforms. The game has remained largely unchanged even after Tencent bought a significant amount of shares in Riot. If anything, the game has been gaining a lot of traction in the Chinese market; so much that people (and organisations) have shifted focus to LoL instead of DOTA2. The game is yet to make its way to the mobile platform, but that may not be the case for long.

Reuters spoke to sources that claim Riot Games and Tencent Holdings is producing a mobile edition of “LoL.” While one source insists the project has been underway for over a year, another warns it may not be released in 2019. “League of Legends is like the World Cup whereas Honour of Kings is just the Asia Cup,” one source suggested as a comparison. It is also worth noting that Tencent-owned Honour of King is the highest grossing multiplayer online battle arena game from in the Chinese market.

A move to bring LoL to mobile would be ideal for Tencent. In the last year, the game earned $1.4 billion in revenue, on PC alone. Gamers are increasingly gravitating towards the mobile platform and an established title such as LoL will definitely make money. The game generates revenue solely through the sales of in-game cosmetics.

Tencent has reportedly tried to convince Riot to take LoL to mobile multiple times, but the latter refused to oblige. The mobile gaming space already has a plethora of LoL ripoffs that have an established player base. the company has already successfully ported of “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” and “Call of Duty: Mobile.” to Android and iOS, so doing the same with LoL shouldn’t be too difficult; not for a company with Tencent’s resources anyway. Hopefully, more information will arise in the coming months.
