The Order: 1886 wasn’t exactly a remarkable game beyond its outstanding visuals. Still, it’s the game the wider public most easily associates with Irvine-based studio Ready at Dawn, even if they’ve since made the critically acclaimed Lone Echo for VR devices.
Now they’re working on Lone Echo II, due in Q1 2020 for the Oculus Rift. As part of an interview conducted with GamesBeat about the game, Ready at Dawn Founder, CEO and Creative Director Ru Weerasuriya revealed the studio is going to apply some of the lessons learned in the VR environment even in their upcoming triple-A console title.
It’s our third VR title, after Lone Echo and Echo Arena, and then the second one was Echo Combat. I won’t say it’s getting easier, because we knew there were certain things in the first game we needed to improve on. There are new challenges. But knowing more about the hardware makes some things easier. The first time around we had to relearn everything.
Understanding that immersion, it’s something that’s hard to break away from now. We’re working on a triple-A console title right now as well, something we’re developing internally, and funny enough, a lot of the lessons we’ve learned about narrative and immersion and gameplay mechanics, we’re taking some of those lessons into console. It might not be the same display device, but the play agency we learned to do in this game—you’re always there. You can never expect the player to do what you want them to do. They’ll do whatever they want. That’s something we’re carrying with us to the console.
We’ve known Ready at Dawn wanted to go back to making AAA console games for a while. The project is still currently in the prototype phase, though, Weerasuriya confirmed.
No, not yet. It’s incubating internally. It’s in the prototype phase, where we’re building a lot of things internally. We’re funding it ourselves right now. It’s been a lot of fun taking some of those lessons and bouncing them back and forth between the two projects.
It sounds like it’s a project that we won’t see before the next generation of consoles. Still, stay tuned on Wccftech and we’ll keep you apprised of any updates.
