Companies like Samsung and Huawei took a gamble with their foldable smartphones, and while there’s an abundant room for improvement, mega-tech giants like these have sufficient cash to take this kind of risk. Of course, no one said that the design was going to be perfect, but it does present a stepping stone for other manufacturers to improve the design and prevent the mistakes made with the first iteration of foldable smartphones.
Google is one company that doesn’t have a massive lead in the smartphone market, and according to the latest report, it has been experimenting with a foldable handset, which we believe will fall in the Pixel device category, but it won’t launch as soon as we would like.
Google Pixel Development Lead Says There Isn’t a Proper Use Case for Foldable Smartphones at This Current Time
According to an interview with Pixel development head Mario Queiroz, Google has been working on foldable smartphone prototypes, but the company isn’t about to rush out to launch such a device just yet.
“We’re definitely prototyping the technology. We’ve been doing it for a long time. I don’t think there’s a clear use case yet. I think it needs to be more innovative than that. The use case is going to need to be something where you go, ‘Hey, I definitely need to have this.’ Right now, you don’t need to have a foldable. It’s kind of a ‘nice-to-have.”
Google has committed to launching affordable Pixel devices for the foreseeable and if everything works out right, the company may even have a foldable handset launching soon, showing that it wants to expand its mobile portfolio. Naturally, given its share of the market, Google can’t afford to take unnecessary risks, especially given that its Pixel 3 lineup wasn’t selling as much as the search giant would have liked.
More evidence that Google is supporting foldable smartphones is thanks to its Android Q update, which will arrive later in the year. The new firmware will natively support foldable handsets, possibly hinting that a few tweaks and fixes are necessary in order for the company to launch its own version of a foldable. Even Apple is rumored to launch its foldable iPhone next year, but since both companies will most likely want the technology to mature first, and possibly wait for the necessary components to get cheaper, it will take a while before nearly all OEMs commit to this form factor.
