Need to know whether the video playing on YouTube for iPhone is HDR or not? Here’s how you can find out right now.
HDR video has been around for quite some time now and thanks to our ever-increasing internet speeds and improving mobile technologies, we can enjoy high dynamic range content on services like YouTube as well. It’s a very fun way to immerse yourself in what you’re watching thanks to enhanced color depth and even tones throughout the video. But, how do you know you’re actually streaming HDR content from YouTube, more specifically, an iPhone? It’s quite easy actually.
Note: YouTube in HDR is not available on all iPhones.
1. Launch the YouTube app.
2. Search for an HDR video, or play one which you’ve favorited.
3. On the top right hand corner, tap on the three dots to reveal more video related options.
4. Now tap on Quality.
5. If you see an HDR tag right next to the available resolutions, then obviously your content is playing back in high dynamic range. If the tag is not there then it means two things: either your iPhone is not HDR capable or simply the content you’re viewing isn’t.
High dynamic range really makes the content pop on the iPhone’s OLED display, especially if the recorded video does not compromise anything visually. You get to experience true-to-life colors and things get even better when you pump up the display brightness to maximum in a dimly lit room. In fact, YouTube isn’t the only service that supports high dynamic range video, even Netflix does it. Just find a movie or TV show that has a ‘Dolby Vision’ tag and you’ll be enjoying immersive content in no time. Remember one thing though, Netflix requires you to have a top-tier plan if you want to enjoy such content, so don’t be surprised if you open something up just to find out that everything is in SDR. Netflix wants you to pay more to view ‘premium’ content, which includes Dolby Vision and HDR both.
Oh well, at least we have YouTube for the time being that is offering such content for free.
