Corning Unveils Astra Glass: Protective Glass for Tablets, Laptops, and TVs

Corning Gorilla glass 4

Corning Gorilla Glass has been the industry standard when it comes to protective glass for smartphones. Ever since it made its debut with the original iPhone, it has been consistently ahead of all competition by striking a perfect balance between scratch resistance, flexibility, and drop resistance. Today, Corning announced that they’re diversifying outside of the smartphone market with their all-new glass substrate Corning Astra Glass. According to their press release:

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today introduced a new glass substrate, Corning® Astra(TM) Glass, optimized for mid-to-large-size, immersive displays in high-performance tablets, notebooks, and 8K TVs. Corning will showcase this innovation, alongside other industry-leading solutions in its advanced glass portfolio, at the Society for Information Display’s (SID) Display Week in San Jose, California., May 14-16

Astra Glass is aimed at providing the same benefits offered by Gorilla Glass. It aims at protecting your panel from scratches and such while not hindering high-resolution or high-performance displays in the process. According to Corning, Astra Glass is set to join Corning’s portfolio of glass substrates, together with Gorilla Glass and Lotus NXT Glass.

Astra Glass is designed around bigger displays, such as tablets, laptops, and high-res TVs. It’s specifically made to effectively protect high-resolution panels without taking a hit in resolution, pixel density and colour accuracy. Scratch resistance should be the priority here, considering that TVs and laptops aren’t typically meant to be dropped.

Corning didn’t announce which products would come with Astra glass just yet. We should know more in the coming weeks. We can expect to see a significant amount of TVs, laptops and tablets ship with a layer of Astra glass in the next year or so.
