We’re barely into Q2 2019 and it’s already Pixel season. The Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL were one of the most leaked smartphones in recent times, with practically all information regarding these flagship devices being leaked well before their release. Now, the Google Pixel 4 has begun its leak season with a name-drop inside of AOSP.
A reference to the Google Pixel 4 was spotted in a comment to a commit on the AOSP Gerrit:
The plan was to first deploy this on Pixel 3 and make sure that everything actually works. Then move on to Pixel 4 and so on. If I had a Pixel 4 device, I probably wouldn’t have bothered with 4.9 in the first place.
Comments on the AOSP Gerrit are restricted to Google employees only, so this isn’t a random reference by a nobody. While not a leak per-se of the Pixel 4, this comment does build upon the existence and development of a successor to the Pixel 3. Based on the context of the comment, there is also a possibility that a development device could already be live for testing.
The Google Pixel is not expected to launch before October 2019, if one extrapolates the timeline of previous Pixel devices. Nonetheless, we expect to hear plenty more about the device ahead of its launch schedule. Stay tuned!
