Apple Reportedly Planning to Launch Three OLED iPhone Models for 2020 – Company Might Include a Small 5.42-Inch Variant

Apple iPhone 2020 models all OLED screens

Once more, Apple has been reported to completely switch to an all-OLED iPhone future for 2020, meaning that 2019 could be the last year when we’ll ever witness an LCD-based iPhone. For next year and this, the technology giant is reportedly planning on unveiling three models. While two of these devices will be targeted to customers who want to pay more for some extra features, there is also said to be a smaller version bearing an all-screen design.

Smaller 5.42-Inch iPhone Model for 2020 Might Feature OLED Screen Sourced From Either Samsung or LG

According to DigiTimes, citing sources from Taiwan’s handset component supply chain, Apple is reportedly planning to launch three iPhone models. All three of them are said to feature an OLED screen, with the following display sizes mentioned.

  • 42-inch
  • 06-inch
  • 67-inch

The two larger models will replace the upcoming 2019 iPhone models, which have been reported to feature a 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch display, just like their 2018 predecessors. According to the source, Apple might tap Samsung Display or LG Display to manufacture the screen. If Samsung ends up getting the orders, the 5.42-inch iPhone might feature the Korean giant’s Y-Octa display, which is an advanced and flexible AMOLED screen that removes the film substrate and makes the display thinner. Since Apple is all about thinner devices, the attractive features of Samsung’s Y-Octa technology might convince the California-based giant to stick to its smartphone rival for orders.

However, LG’s TOE touch technology might also be incorporated in order to obtain leverage on pricing. In short, both of these display technologies are said to be less costly for Apple, which is exactly what the latter might be aiming for when releasing a cheaper iPhone model, but this time, bearing an OLED screen. For next year, we might also see Apple gravitate to TSMC’s 5nm FinFET technology, which might be used in making the company’s A14 SoC.

Next year will also be the time when Apple launches the first 5G-ready iPhones, and there are rumors that a foldable device from the company might be materialized. As for this year, the 2019 iPhone lineup is said to sport larger batteries and reverse wireless charging support.

In short, there’s plenty to look forward to this year and the next, so stay tuned for more updates from our side.
