Mortal Kombat 11 Is Built On Custom Unreal Engine 3, Programming Lead Confirms

Mortal Kombat 11

Unlike most recent games, including high profile fighting games such as Street Fighter V and Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11 is not built on Unreal Engine 4.

On his official Twitter profile, NetherRealm Studios Programming Lead Jon Greenberg confirmed that Mortal Kombat 11 is built on the studio’s custom Unreal Engine 3 version. To clarify the confusion, Jon Greenberg revealed that the mobile release is actually using Unreal Engine 4, and footage got mixed in the behind the scenes trailer.

Mortal Kombat 11 is shaping up to be a very good fighting game, as noted by Callum in his hands-on preview. He particularly liked the Fatal Blow mechanic.

My favourite and perhaps most obvious addition is the new ‘Fatal Blow’ mechanic. Your ‘Fatal Blow’ becomes available after your health reaches a critical level, you can only use it once per match, not per round, and it is blockable. It’s the big gun you keep in your back pocket. Land the blow, and you will deal out about 25% of their maximum health. A clear game changer. The animation is as overly dramatic as such a massive attack demands.

Mortal Kombat 11 launches on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on April 23rd.
