Microsoft released Windows 10 version 1903 Insider Preview Build 18362 to Insiders in the Fast ring on March 20. Just two days later, the build was offered to those on the Slow ring making many believe that 18362 would be the Release-to-Manufacturing (RTM) build. While the speed gave us hopes that major issues have been ironed out, the company is today pulling build 18362 back from the Slow ring after a number of Insiders reported installation issues.
Microsoft has released the following update today clarifying that a cumulative update sent out for a previous build was causing the issues for the potential Release Candidate (RC).
Over the last couple of weeks, Insiders in the Slow ring have been receiving new 19H1 builds in addition to also receiving Cumulative Updates. After flighting Build 18362 to the Slow ring on Friday, Insiders began reporting they were unable to complete the update. We have discovered an issue with the Build 18356.16 (KB4494123) Cumulative Update that was preventing the update to Build 18362 from completing successfully. This issue only impacts Insiders who are on Build 18356.16 who try to update to Build 18362. THANK YOU to Insiders who reported feedback on this in Feedback Hub and upvoted – your feedback was immensely valuable in helping investigate this issue over the weekend! The team is currently working on a fix now. In the meantime, Build 18362 will no longer be offered to Insiders who are on Build 18356.16, so Insider PCs don’t continue to try and take Build 18362 and fail. We will post another update once we release the fix and resume the Build 18362 flight. Thank you!
We will update this space when the company reissues this particular build to the Slow ring.
It remains unknown whether Windows 10 1903 Build 18362 is indeed the RTM build. However, considering the company was releasing 19H1 builds quite frequently and hasn’t sent a new one since March 20, it is likely that this will be the build pushed out to the Release Preview ring as long as there’s no breaking bug.
