The Xiaomi Mi 8 EE with 3D facial recognition may finally launch outside of China

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition was launched in May 2018 in China, alongside the Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and Mi Band 3. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition featured the same internal specifications as the Mi 8, meaning you get a 6.21″ FHD+ AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, options of RAM and storage ranging from 4GB/64GB to 8GB/256GB, a 3,400 mAh battery, two 12MP rear cameras and a 20MP front camera.

In addition to these, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition also featured an in-display fingerprint sensor with pressure activation to save on battery. The phone also has a 3D facial scanning feature for face recognition, similar to that on the iPhone X. The phone also had a “translucent” back, which had a sticker underneath to highlight the internals in a prettier manner. As a side note, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro differs from the Mi 8 Explorer Edition on the basis of its infrared face unlock, which is less secure and inferior than 3D facial recognition.

The Mi 8 Explorer Edition never made its way outside of mainland China, which is a real shame because the phone did feature a powerful feature set at the time of its launch.

As it turns out, Xiaomi may finally be preparing to launch the device outside of China. XDA Recognized Developer yshalsager spotted the codename and marketing name of an unreleased Xiaomi device. The codename is “ursa_global” and the marketing name is “小米手机8透明探索版 国际版” which translates to “MI8ExplorerGlobal”. This can readily inferred to be the global variant of the Explorer Edition.

We currently do not know if the global variant of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition would feature updated internals, though it is unlikely to be the case as Xiaomi would rather save the best for its next flagship. It is also unknown when the device will be launched, and in which regions. Pricing is also unknown, as it would not make sense to launch the global edition at the same converted prices in which the phone was launched in China a year ago.

Thanks to XDA Recognized Developer yshalsager for the tip!
