OPPO R19 isn’t coming in 2019, but a Snapdragon 855 flagship is coming

OPPO is one of the largest smartphone vendors in the world. The company, which is owned by BBK Electronics, traditionally releases two R series upper mid-range phones in any given year. These phones have limited availability, which is mostly restricted to China. In 2018, OPPO launched the OPPO R15, the OPPO R17/OPPO R17 Pro, and the OPPO RX17 Pro/RX17 Neo. The company also launched the OPPO Find X, which was the first OPPO Find-branded flagship smartphone to launch in four years. It was fair to expect a hypothetical OPPO R19 to launch sometime in Q1 or Q2 of this year, but OPPO’s Vice President Shen Piren has stated on his Weibo account that the OPPO R19 will not be launching any time soon in 2019.

This news is surprising as it changes OPPO’s phone portfolio. In 2018, the company’s phone portfolio consisted of the Find X, R series, F series, and the budget A series. This year, OPPO started a new series by launching the OPPO K1 in India. The announcement of Mr. Shen essentially means that until further notice, OPPO has cancelled the upper mid-range R series as the company sees no reason for launching the R19.

Mr. Shen also stated that the elevating front camera mechanism would be promoted in emerging markets. The OPPO F11 Pro, therefore, will likely launch in OPPO’s international markets, and it has already been confirmed to be launching soon in India. The phone will have very small bezels, a popup front camera, and a 48MP rear camera. The F series has traditionally launched in international markets, and the F11 Pro isn’t expected to be different in this field. It will succeed the OPPO F9 Pro, which was launched in September.

OPPO has previously stated that it will release a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845-powered phone in 2019, which will have 5G. Mr. Shen also stated that he personally does find any additional value in folding displays. According to rumors, the company is expected to launch a foldable 5G phone in the coming months. It has also recently demoed technologies such as a 10x hybrid optical zoom camera and a full-screen in-display fingerprint sensor. The in-display fingerprint sensor, in particular, can be expected to its way in OPPO’s upcoming flagship.
