Microsoft officially bent the knee last year when it announced moving its Edge browser to Google’s Chromium engine. Now that the company is no longer giving Google a hard time with its browser battery and performance tests, Microsoft is apparently helping Google make Chrome better.
The Windows maker has released an official extension for Google Chrome called “Web Activities” bringing the operating system’s popular Timeline feature to Google’s browser. Timeline allows you to sync web browsing and app history between multiple devices and operating systems, including iOS and Android. With the extension now available for Google’s Chrome, you will be able to do the same through the browser, accessing your browsing history across the devices.
The “Web Activities” extension is now officially available in the Chrome Web Store (download link). All you need to do is to install it, sign-in with your Microsoft Account, and that’s it.
The Timeline extension isn’t the only feature Google Chrome is getting from Microsoft
With Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to join Google’s browsing capabilities, the company isn’t stopping at just an extension. Chrome is apparently also getting support for Windows 10 Mixed Reality. Chrome Canary builds 74.0.3710.0 reads:
If enabled, Chrome will use Windows Mixed Reality devices for VR (supported only on Windows 10 or later).
The feature is currently only available for Windows Insiders who can test it through the latest build of Chrome Canary. You will need to be running Windows 10 build 18329 or later to be able to run this. If you meet these requirements, just type chrome://flags/#windows-mixed-reality to enable Windows Mixed Reality on the browser. Chrome Canary build can be downloaded from here, but do note that it’s only recommended for developers since these are nightly builds filled with bugs.
Apart from the extension and support for MR, Google’s Chrome is also getting Windows 10’s “Show text suggestions as I type” feature that arrived with the April 2018 Update. It appears Microsoft is all in to help make Chrome better for Google. Good news for Chrome fans, but definitely a bad news for those who want more competition in the industry.
