The Nubia Red Magic Mars gaming phone is coming to North America and Europe for $399

If there’s something that Nubia has been doing right, at least as of lately, it’s bringing heat into the competition with, well, interesting-looking phones. Just look at the Nubia X for an example. The device removes the front-facing camera and instead opts for adding a secondary display on the back for selfies in an effort to increase screen-to-body ratio significantly. The concept worked alright, and even encouraged other manufacturers, such as Vivo, to try it out. Another device that Nubia recently launched was the Red Magic, their own take on a gaming-oriented smartphone that wants to take on the Razer Phone 2, Asus ROG Phone, and Xiaomi Black Shark Helo.

More recently, the device got a successor called the Nubia Red Magic Mars. It brings the same overall formula with updated internals and some new features. Said device was first announced back in November 2018, but it was exclusive to the Chinese market until now. Nubia has announced that the device will be making its way to the West, as both the North American and European markets will be getting it by the end of the month.

Physically, the device looks and feels pretty much the same as its predecessor, sans some cosmetic improvements. The device is already designed to stand out from the crowd, so that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Where the device really shines through, and with good reason, is on the newer internals as well as the added functionality. The Snapdragon 835 is dumped for a newer Snapdragon 845–the Snapdragon 855 wasn’t officially a thing when the Red Magic Mars was first announced back in November, so we can’t really complain about the older internals this time around.

You still get plenty of power, which is exactly the purpose of a gaming phone which, by the way, comes with up to 10GB of RAM. And the device should be a pleasure to play with thanks to that added functionality I talked about earlier. Customizable touch shoulder buttons are in tow here in an attempt to improve your gaming experience by leaps and bounds. The phone also comes with both liquid and air cooling solutions to try to keep overheating at bay. There’s also a gaming mode dubbed “Red Magic Game Space” which boosts the device’s CPU, GPU, and RAM while disabling most visual disturbances (notifications and calls).

Pricing and Availability

The Nubia Red Magic Mars is coming to the Western world on January 31st. It’s not clear which countries will receive it exactly, but we do know the phone will be launching in North American and European markets, so that’s already something.

As for pricing, the phone will start at $399 for the lowest-end version, which is fairly good for a gaming-oriented device with a flagship-grade processor and 6GB of RAM. There’s no information about availability for the 8GB RAM and 10GB RAM models, but if Chinese pricing tells us something, the device is more than likely to go up to $599 for the higher-end version.
