Anytime a new smartphone is launched after Google has released a new version of Android we wonder if the device will have the new software on it. Android Pie was officially released in August of last year, and a month later, Honor launched the Honor 8X and Honor 8X Max in China. Since it can take many months to develop a new smartphone we weren’t really expecting either of these phones to launch with Android Pie. We were, however, curious about when it would receive the new update. Thanks to a tip from a fellow XDA community member, we have learned that Honor has opened up a beta recruitment thread for the Honor 8X.
The company has been busy getting the Honor 8X to as many people as possible. A month after its Chinese launch, the international variant was released. Since then we’ve seen more activity in the dedicated XDA forum for it due to more people acquiring the smartphone. Sadly, it too came with Android Oreo installed on it so people remained curious about when it would be receiving its official update to Android 9 Pie. We have yet to be given a stable launch date, but we now know the company has opened up a beta program for it.
Over in the Honor forums, a new thread has been created calling for those who currently own the Honor 8X. Before they roll out the stable version of MIUI 9 for the device, the company wants to perform a beta test with as many people as possible. This will help them become aware of any widespread bugs and figure out which ones (if any are found) need to be prioritized. The thread includes this link and says Honor 8X owners simply need to download and install the beta APK “and get ready to become a BETA Tester!”
