We’ve all heard of plasma (RIP), LCD, and OLED displays, but HiSense introduced something many may not be familiar with. The company announced three 4K ULED displays among its Android TV lineup at CES 2019. Not to be confused with OLED, ULED has been defined as an LCD display with LED backlights that also employs quantum dot technology to improve its color gamut and allow granular control of the display.
Powered by the Android TV platform, the HiSense models are led by the 75-inch U9F ULED model that runs as bright as 2,200 nits. You can also selectively dim the display, as HiSense mentioned in its spec sheet:
And the intricate local dimming options are packed with over 1000 active backlight zones- the power to control which areas of the display illuminate and which dim more than others.
The premium U9F model will be available in June of this year for a suggested retail price of $3,499.99.
The next ULED model is only 10 fewer inches diagonally but is a whopping $2,500 less while retaining the same resolution and selective dimming capabilities. Its max brightness is rated at over 1,000 nits, just under half of the 75U9F’s rated max. Dubbed the 65H9F, it will only set you back $999.99 and will be available in May 2019, a month earlier than the 75U9F.
Clocking in well under the thousand-dollar price mark is the 65H8F at $749.99, available along with the aforementioned 65H9F model in May 2019. Its spec sheet doesn’t mention a max brightness number, but it also has a ULED display and selective dimming capabilities (which HiSense refers to as local dimming). The 75U9F and 65H9F models also employ AI algorithms to automatically adjust video and audio on the fly for an “optimal viewing and listening experience.” Although the 65H8F model also has selective dimming and ULED technology, its spec sheet makes no mention of such algorithms.
Also included in the HiSense CES 2019 Android TV lineup is a 65-inch $349.99 Android TV without ULED technology. It’s accompanied by a 55-inch H9F ULED model for $699 and a 50-inch H8F ULED model for $399.99. The smaller ULED models should be available in May 2019 and the non-ULED model will be made available “later in 2019.”
