Guerrilla: Collaboration with Kojima Productions Has Been Intense, We Didn’t Expect This Level of Chemistry

Death Stranding

As someone of you will remember, Guerrilla Games helped Kojima Productions when the development team had just split from KONAMI. They provided the Decima Engine used in games like Until Dawn beyond Guerrilla’s own Killzone Shadow Fall, RIGS: Mechanized Combat League and Horizon Zero Dawn.

As a result, Death Stranding, the highly anticipated game in development at Kojima Productions, is powered by the Decima Engine. In an interview published earlier this week on The Next Web, Guerrilla’s Technical Director Michiel van der Leeuw talked a bit about this ongoing partnership.

Inventor types like us don’t just like to make things, we like to share them. Sharing makes you stronger. Sometimes you don’t get anything back but thanks – that’s also nice. But sometimes you find someone who’s on the same track, and it gives you all this creative energy. It’s all just code in the end, anyway: it’s the mindset of the maker that matters.

We gave Kojima Productions the engine as a show of good Sony citizenship. They’d lost all their tech, it would have felt rude not to share. But we didn’t expect to have this much chemistry with a studio from the other side of the globe. Collaboration has been intense.

We have similar priorities. How long to iterate, how to keep your code clean, where to prioritize efficiency, in what order gameplay elements should go. But in some ways, they’re also very different. For instance, they think photorealism is far more important than we do.

There have been quite a few rumors regarding Death Stranding as of late. The game might be already in the polishing phase, and Best Buy Canada even seems to think it will be out this year at some point.

As for the next game by Guerrilla, there’s no official information but it is practically guaranteed to be a sequel to the highly successful action RPG Horizon Zero Dawn. Given that it came out in early 2017, the timing could be ripe for a second game to be launching as a PlayStation 5 launch title.
