DJI didn’t announce a new Spark or a Mavic Air, but it did announce the Smart Controller for the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom.
Though we’ve been waiting for a brand new Spark to arrive from DJI, but instead, the company went ahead and announced a brand new controller for the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom. Called the Smart Controller, it features a built-in display and features OcuSync 2.0 for bulletproof connectivity with your drone.
The display is 5.5-inch big, and features 1080p resolution and is touted to be two times brighter than your smartphone. Also, thanks to OcuSync 2.0, you can rest assured that every pixel on that 1080p display will be used to its full potential. Furthermore, OcuSync 2.0 allows you to take your drone as far as 8KM (depending on conditions) with intelligent switching between 2.4 and 5.8GHz also on board for the ultimate drone flying experience even in a crowded airspace.
Just like the regular controller, this one is super portable and you can unscrew the joysticks so that you can carry it in a bag or if you have Shrek sized pockets. DJI also went ahead to make sure that this controller is reliable in extreme weather conditions, allowing you to remain functional between -20 to 40 degrees Celsius.
The remote features Android, and runs the DJI Go 4 app for flying your drone. Thanks to the integration of Android, you can even share what you shot on social media immediately, which of course requires an internet connection. That can be achieved by simply connecting to a WiFi network, thanks to the onboard WiFi radio.
Featuring a massive 5000mAh battery, you can can get a total flight time of up to 2.5 hours. But even if you do start to run out of juice, Quick Charge technology ensures that you will be back in the air in no time.

Now, here comes the rather cringe-full part – the price. If you’re thinking that this remote is cheap, then you’re so wrong. It will set you back a cool $650 if you’re purchasing it after you’ve bought the Mavic 2 Pro or Mavic 2 Zoom. But at the time of purchase, you can bundle it in with your drone for a cool $400 only. Needless to say that this thing is not cheap regardless of how great it may seem. Admit it, the luxury of not having to take your phone out, slap it into the controller is something which every drone pilot aspires, and the Smart Controller fulfills all your wishes, but at a darn hefty price.
