iPhone 16 OLED Panels Could Introduce Micro-Lens Technology For Higher Brightness and Power Efficiency, But Not Both

Apple is scheduled to host its Wonderlust event on September 12 where it will see fit to announce its upcoming iPhone 15 and Apple Watch lineup. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to arrive with a boatload of forward-facing additions, including USB-C and Dynamic Island across the lineup. Ahead of the iPhone 15 unveiling, we now hear that Apple plans to use Micro-Lens OLED panels on the iPhone 16 models.

OLED Panels on the iPhone 16 series could come with Micro-Lens technology designed to increase brightness levels or consume less power

According to a new report from The Elec, Samsung and LG have pursued their interest in offering Apple to incorporate micro-lens technology into the OLED panels on the iPhone. The technology would allow the OLED panel in the iPhone to be brighter and less power-hungry. However, there are certain trade-offs to using the micro-lens arrays in the OLED panel. If Apple does go ahead and accept the proposal from one or both of its current suppliers, the display has to meet the company's standard.

As of right now, the micro-lens array features two downsides that suppliers should consider. The way the technology works is not simple as it requires the lenses to be designed to minimize internal reflections. The light path is redirected from leaking backward or sideways to the front. This can potentially allow the screen brightness to increase while consuming the same level of energy. However, the micro-lens array can also deliver the same level of brightness while consuming less power. This is the trade-off associated with the technology but if Samsung or LG can offer higher brightness levels with lower power consumption using the micro-lens technology, it could be a viable feature for the iPhone 16 lineup.

Another major aspect to note here is that Samsung and LG are using different materials for the technology and both are not on par with Apple's set standards. The company is yet to give a response if it sees fit to incorporate the technology in OLED panels for the iPhone 16. Apple's reservations revolve around the efficiency of technology and whether it will be ready ahead of mass production of the iPhone 16.

The company could also opt for the micro-lens technology for its iPhone 16 OLED displays if it manages to keep power consumption low while delivering the same brightness levels. Samsung is already using the technology in its Galaxy S series of devices while LG has implemented it in its OLED smart TVs. Apple's iPhone 16 lineup will be introduced with various new additions, including solid-state buttons on the 'Pro' models. It remains to be seen if Apple will further improve the display quality.
