During the Flash Memory Show 2023, Frore Systems demonstrated some very innovative SSD solutions that utilized its AirJet solution, the world's first solid-state active cooling chip technology.
AirJet Technology Delivers Industry-Leading Active-Cooling Technology On Phison's PCIe Gen5 SSDs, Up To 64 TB Compact Solutions Demoed
We got a close-up of the Frore System's AirJet SSD active-cooling technology at Computex 2023 which is seen as a lower-power and less intrusive solution to cooling for high-performance SSD devices. The AirJet solution comes in two form factors, a Mini and a Pro variant which are to be utilized in a diverse range of products. More here.
These performance records are possible thanks to a break through technology in heat removal. AirJet - the World's first solid-state active cooling chip - is just 2.8mm thick, 27.5mm x 41.5mm in size, and weighs only 11 grams.
AirJet is a scalable solution, with additional heat removal achievable by simply adding more AirJet chips. Each chip removes 5W of heat, and the easy integration of multiple chips means two chips can remove 10W, three chips 15W and so on. AirJet’s compact size and scalable nature means manufacturers can adopt the heat removal technology in a wide range of applications, enabling increased performance in faster, thinner, lighter, silent, and dustproof devices.

Following is the overview of the demonstrations showcased by Frore Systems and its partners using the AirJet technology:
- The world’s fastest compact Gaming SSD with AirJet: The Phison PS5026-E26 PCIe Gen5 SSD controller with I/O+ Technology actively cooled with 2 AirJet Minis, is the most powerful device in its class; with no throttling, 14,175MB/s sustained sequential read performance and over 1000MB/s PCMark 10 Storage Test performance - a world first for a NAND-based M.2 SSD. More details here.
Collaboration Partner: Phison Electronics Corp. (TPEX: 8299), a global leader in NAND flash controller and storage solutions: - The world’s fastest 8TB Compact SSD Accessory with AirJet: A Sabrent 8TB compact SSD accessory with AirJet demonstrates a 3x sustained performance increase while lowering skin temperature by 20oC. More details here.
Collaboration Partner: Sabrent, a leading American manufacturer of computer peripherals and accessories. - The first compact 64TB SSD Storage device with AirJet: A solution for fast, silent, large-scale mobile data storage, the 64TB OWC Mercury Pro U.2 Dual storage device with silent active cooling using 8 AirJet Minis, unleashing performance and enables the fastest, compact, 64TB capacity SSD storage device in its class. More details here.
Collaboration Partner: OWC is a company dedicated to providing reliable solutions for computer hardware, accessories, and software.
Starting with the first demo, we have a Gen5 SSD based on the Phison E28 controller which was attached to an ASUS PCIe 5.0 M.2 AIC. The solution utilizes two AirJet Mini, each of which is capable of providing 5W of cooling so that's 10W from the dual-Mini solution. The cooling is scalable that goes up 5W with the addition of each AirJet Mini. With this dual-Mini implementation, the Gen5 SSD was able to deliver sustained transfer rates of 14,175 MB/s (Read) & a PCMark 10 score of beyond 10 Thousand points. This is an exceptional performance that currently outperforms the fastest client Gen5 SSDs that top out at 12.4 GB/s.
This would turn out to be a great solution for the upcoming SiliconMotion SM2508 SSDs which are expected to deliver top-notch speeds at just 3.5W TDPs. A single 5W AirJet Mini solution should be more than enough for these drives.
The second demo is part of Sabrent's new SSD accessory which can host standard M.2 2280 form factors and cooled by two AirJet Mini. The device is a Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus in 8 TB capacity which without the cooling solution throttles down to 1000 MB/s at 62C but using the active-cooling mini solution, the device boosts to 3000 MB/s with 42C temperatures. That's a 3x performance boost & 20C reduction in temps.
Last of all, there's a compact 64 TB SSD storage solution from OWC which is equipped with a total of eight 8 TB SSDs and each SSD has its own dedicated AirJet Mini cooler in the OWC Mercury Pro U.2 dual-storage solution. The solution is rated to deliver up to 2700 MB/s sustained sequential reads in a compact 3.5" U.2 carrier size. These are some interesting applications for the AirJet Mini SSD active coolers and we can't wait to see the Pro variant get demoed in higher-end solutions too.
