NVIDIA Dominates South Korean DIY Market With 94% Market Share, AMD & Intel Fighting For CPU Market Share 1

NVIDIA is the most popular GPU brand within the South Korean DIY market while AMD & Intel are fighting for CPU market share within the country, reports Danawa Research.

South Korean DIY Retailer, Danawa, Shares PC Market Statistics For 1H 2023: NVIDIA Leads In GPU, AMD & Intel Split Almost Equally In The CPU Segment

Over the last couple of years, we have seen AMD Ryzen CPUs eating up Intel's DIY market share but the recent influx of budgeted offerings within the 12th and 13th Gen family has turned the blue team into the value brand whereas AMD aims at the more high-end and premium marketplace.

Starting off first with the CPU market share, Intel leads with a 57% market share but AMD isn't far behind with a 43% market share. It looks like Intel is trying to retain its 50%+ market share while AMD is gunning for half of the market share with its Ryzen offerings. An interesting thing seen in the results is that the vast majority of the Intel userbase is running the more budget-friendly 13th and 12th Gen Core i5 CPUs whereas the Core i7 series is the second most popular segment. Intel Core i9 series has its audience too but ends up with a single-digit market share whereas the Core i3 CPUs have yet to obtain a double-digit market share too.

Most Popular Intel CPUs (1H 2023):

  • 13th Gen Core i5 - 36.09%
  • 12th Gen Core i5 - 24.39%
  • 13th Gen Core i7 - 18.13%

Most Popular Intel Platform (1H 2023):

  • B660 - 34.21%
  • B760 - 27.70%
  • H610 - 21.66%

The reason why the Core i3 CPUs aren't seen as an ideal chip could be due to their quad-core design which looks very last-gen and the majority of games nowadays require a good multi-threaded chip with at least 6 cores or 8 threads. That might change with the 14th Gen lineup though we cannot say for sure until the final specs are confirmed.

  • DDR4 DRAM Share (1H 2023) - 72%
  • DDR5 DRAM Share (1H 2023) - 23%
  • DDR4 DRAM Share (June 2023) - 62%
  • DDR5 DRAM Share (June 2023) - 37%

As for the chipsets. once again, the B660, B760, and the H610 chipsets end up being more popular than the Z790, & Z690 options mainly due to far more affordable price points. The benefit of the entry-level options is that they are also available in DDR4 flavors which look more enticing from a value proposition versus the DDR5 boards where you not only have to pay extra for the boards but also for the DRAM itself too. The good thing is that DDR5 prices are coming down and June results show that 37% of DIY users went for DDR5 memory compared to 23% throughout its life cycle so far.

Moving over to the AMD camp, 28.71% of the South Korean DIY PC builders have moved to AM5 while the majority (71.29%) are still using AM4 platforms. The AMD Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 chips from the Ryzen 5000 family are the most popular on AM4 and the same is the case with the Ryzen 7000 "Zen 4" series. The majority of AM4 builders are running B550 motherboards followed by A520 & for AM5 users, B650 remains the most popular choice. The A620 offerings are recent & constitute just a 3.86% share which could be due to a lackluster feature set and higher prices than the A520 boards.

Most Popular Intel CPUs (1H 2023):

  • Ryzen 3 "Zen 3" - 61.63%
  • Ryzen 7 "Zen 3" - 14.57%
  • Ryzen 5 "Zen 4" - 11,32%

Most Popular Intel Platform (1H 2023):

  • B550 - 48.09%
  • A520 - 22.57%
  • B650 - 20.23%

Now coming to the GPU side of things, here NVIDIA leads as the most popular brand with a 94% market share hold within the DIY segment followed by a 5% share for AMD Radeon GPUs and just a 1.0% market share for Intel Arc GPUs. Amongst the NVIDIA GPUs, the GeForce GTX 16 series has a 15% market share, the GeForce RTX 40 series has a 22.12% market share and the RTX 30 series has a 62.73% market share.

  • NVIDIA - 94%
  • AMD - 5%
  • Intel - 1%

You could say that the reason for the lower market share for RTX 40 GPUs is due to the more recent launch, poor price-to-performance value, and the recent launch of the more budget-esque SKUs such as the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 series cards. Amongst the RTX 30 crowd, the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3060 remain the most popular whereas the most popular GPU within the RTX 40 series is the RTX 4070 Ti which is quite a surprise. The most recent June sales figures show that RTX 40 GPU sales are starting to pick up the pace, reaching 34% versus 52% of the RTX 30 series.

GeForce GPU Market Share (1H 2023):

  • RTX 30 Series - 63%
  • RTX 40 Series - 22%
  • GTX 16 Series - 15%

GeForce GPU Market Share (June 2023):

  • RTX 30 Series - 52%
  • RTX 40 Series - 34%
  • GTX 16 Series - 13%

Most Popular GeForce GPUs (1H 2023):

  • RTX 3060 - 29%
  • RTX 3060 Ti - 25%
  • RTX 4070 Ti - 12%

The still unusually high RTX 30 GPU figures are due to vastly discounted and refurbished RTX 3060 and RTX 3070 stock which is being cleared away by DIY channels. Finally, on the more component side of things, it is reported that M.2 SSDs have reached a 67% market share and only 33% of the share was covered by 2.5-Inch SATA SSDs. More users also went for 1 TB & above capacities since games and applications continue to gobble up multiple GBs of storage space. These numbers are only indicative of the South Korean PC DIY market and should not be compared with global market share figures.
