Apples Larger 32-Inch iMac in Early Development But Could Replace Your Mac Studio and Pro Display XDR Setup

Apple 32-inch iMac Pro with Apple Silicon

Apple announced the 24-inch iMac back in 2020 with an M1 chip and it is the only version it is selling. The company saw fit to discontinue the 27-inch iMac with an Intel chip, meaning that a slot for a larger iMac has been empty in the lineup. We have previously reported that the company is working on a larger iMac but no additional pertaining to the screen size was available. Now, we are hearing that Apple is working on a 32-inch version of the iMac with Apple Silicon but it rests in the early developmental phase and would not launch this year or the next.

Apple to launch a 32-inch iMac in 2025, potentially with an M3 Pro or M3 Max chips - making it a powerful all-in-one option

Mar Gurman previously coined that Apple was working on a 30-inch iMac model. Today, the analyst notes in his latest Power On newsletter that the iMac will come with a 32-inch screen size powered by Apple Silicon. At this point, it is unclear what chip the company will use. What we do know is that the iMac will feature the same screen size as that of the Pro Display XDR. Since Apple has discontinued its 27-inch Intel iMac Pro, we suspect that the 32-inch model will be the direct replacement of the machine.

If the news has any heft to it and what we are speculating is in line with Apple's plans, the 32-inch model could be the next generation iMac Pro with Apple Silicon. This is because the iMac Pro is one of the last products to go through the Apple Silicon transition. As for the launch, Gurman notes that the 32-inch iMac will not launch this year or even in 2024 but can be expected in 2025.

If the company sticks to the launch time frame as speculated by the analyst, the 32-inch iMac could house a 3nm Apple chip for enhanced performance. Since the company already offers a 24-inch entry-level iMac with an M1 chip, the 32-inch model could pack a lot of power. The launch time frame hints that the machine could come with an M3 Pro or M3 Max chip for faster CPU and GPU requirements of an all-in-one computer. However, nothing can be said for sure at this point.

If Apple is indeed working on a larger 32-inch iMac, it features the potential to replace your Mac Studio and Pro Display XDR setup. This is because the iMac is an all-in-one solution compared to the Mac Studio and Pro Display XDR. The Pro Display XDR features 6K resolution and costs almost $5,000 while the Mac Studio starts at $1,999 for the base mode with an M2 Max chip. In comparison, the 32-inch iMac makes a lot of sense as an overall package. However, it remains to be seen how the company is planning to position the product and at what price.

The company is also working on a new model of the 24-inch iMac with faster internals. Currently, the machine is only available with an M2 chip and it is due for an upgrade. Apple plans to launch the 24-inch iMac with an M3 chip fabricated on a 3nm process early next year which will bring major performance and efficiency gains.
