AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX 64 Zen 4-Core CPU Spotted: Running On BoulderGulch "Storm Peak" Platform 1

AMD's next-generation Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7985WX CPU with 64 Zen 4 cores has been spotted running on a Storm Peak motherboard platform.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7985WX Packs 64 Zen 4 Cores, 256 MB Cache & Running On BoulderGulch "Storm Peak" Motherboard

Spotted by Benchleaks, we have our first listing of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 "Storm Peak" CPU with its actual branding instead of just an OPN code like the ones that have leaked out before. The CPU in question is the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX which has been listed on the PugetSystems benchmark database within the Metashape 1.0 benchmark. This benchmark is very GPU intensive so we can ignore the performance results for now.

As for the specifications, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX features 64 cores based on the Zen 4 core architecture so that's 8 CCDs with 256 MB of L3 cache. The CPU should feature a TDP of around 280-320W and will be compatible with the Storm Peak platform. In this case, the processor was running on the AMD BoulderGulch reference motherboard with 256 GB (8 x 32 GB) DDR5-5600 memory.

The specifications don't reveal much about the specific platform so we are unsure if this is the HEDT or WS. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 lineup is set to feature both HEDT and WS or Workstation SKUs with the former offering 4-channel DDR5 / 64 PCIe Gen 5 lanes and the latter offering 8-channel DDR5 / 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes. The HEDT chips were said to be compatible on LGA 4096 (SP6) motherboards while the WS chips are expected to be compatible with the SP5 socket (LGA 6096). Following is how the lineups will stack up in the HEDT segment:

  • AMD HEDT: Threadripper 7000 (5nm Zen 4) / 4-Channel DDR5 / 64 PCIe Gen 5 / 4096 SP6 Socket
  • Intel HEDT: Xeon W-2400 (10nm Golden Cove / 4-Channel DDR5 / 64 PCIe Gen 5 / LGA 4677 Socket

For the workstation segment, we have:

  • AMD WS: Threadripper 7000 (5nm Zen 4) / 8-Channel DDR5 / 128 PCIe Gen 5 / 6096 SP5 Socket
  • Intel WS: Xeon W-3400 (10nm Golden Cove / 8-Channel DDR5 / 112 PCIe Gen 5 / LGA 4677 Socket

Several SKUs were also leaked out last month and are said to launch in Q3 2023 although that can change since nothing is set in stone yet.
