AMD's next-gen Strix Point APUs under the Ryzen 8000 family will be featuring two configurations based on Zen 5 and Zen 5C cores.

AMD Ryzen 8000 Strix Point APUs Come In Two Flavors: Mono With Zen 5 & Zen 5C Hybrid & Other With Zen 5 Chiplets

Recently, there have been various rumors and leaks regarding AMD's next-gen Ryzen 8000 APU family codenamed Strix Point. We know from AMD's official roadmap that the Strix Point family will utilize Zen 5 CPU cores, RDNA 3.5 GPU cores, and an enhanced AI engine. Rumors revealed that AMD's Strix Point lineup will come in two flavors, a standard monolithic design & a chiplet series.

The AMD Strix Point Monolithic APUs will be similar to Phoenix APUs with all core IPs and I/O on the same die. With Phoenix, AMD changed a few things and the company recently confirmed that a few of its entry-level Ryzen 7040 APUs utilize a hybrid design, featuring both Zen 4 & Zen 4C cores. The same design is now expected to be utilized within the Strix Point Monolithic dies. As @Olrak29_ highlights, the AMD Strix Point Mono chips will feature 4 Zen 5 cores and 8 Zen 5C cores for a maximum of 12 cores and 24 threads.

A recently leaked APU may very much be utilizing this exact same configuration as it also featured 12 cores and 24 threads. Besides this, we can expect AMD to feature its RDNA 3.5 GPU cores and a range of I/O within the same die. We also know from a recent LLVM patch that the GFX1150 & 1151 IDs are reserved for Strix Point and Strix Point Halo APUs. We are most likely going to get the APUs as the Ryzen 8050 series (Ryzen 8000 APU lineup).

But there's more, the AMD Ryzen 8000 Strix Halo APU family is also mentioned to feature 16 Zen 5 cores. These chips will feature a dual Zen 5 CCD configuration that comprises 8 cores each & the chips are also expected to utilize some form of 3D V-Cache down the road. Kopite7kimi reports that while the Strix Point Halo APUs look very similar to the Granite Ridge "Ryzen 8000" Desktop family, the IOD (IO Die) might end up slightly different. For the Raphael APUs, the iGPU sits within the IOD & the same might be true for the Granite Ridge and Strix Point Halo APUs.

While the iGPU on both Ryzen 8000 Desktop APUs and Strix Point Halo APUs will be using the same RDNA 3.5 architecture, the difference will be in the configuration. The desktop dies mainly utilize a 2 compute unit design while the Strix Halo is expected to feature up to 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units. This will definitely increase the IOD die size by a lot. Following is what we can expect from AMD's Strix Point Halo APUs:

  • Up To 40 Compute Units
  • 2H 2024 Launch (Expected)

The AMD Strix Point APUs are expected to arrive in 2024 which means they will be competing with Intel's Arrow Lake and the follow-up, Lunar Lake. Intel is also going to be implementing similar tech such as hybrid cores, chiplets, and increased graphics cores within its future disaggregated lineup so it will be a very interesting competition between the two adversaries, mainly within the mobile and laptop segment.
