Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the Biggest Zelda Launch in UK History, Greatly Surpassing BOTW Boxed Sales

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the biggest (boxed) Zelda launch in the UK ever, and initial sales have also greatly surpassed those of Hogwarts Legacy.

The sequel to 2017's Breath of the Wild was released last Friday, and initial boxed sales in the UK have dwarfed those of its predecessor. GamesIndustry's Christopher Dring reports that Tears of the Kingdom sold more than 2.7 times as much as Breath of the Wild initially did in the UK. Of course, it's good to note that Breath of the Wild was a launch title for the Nintendo Switch in March of 2017, and as reported recently, the installed base for the Switch currently exceeds 125 million. As such, it only makes sense for Tears of the Kingdom to sell way more than Breath of the Wild initially did. As also reported by Dring in his article, Tears of the Kingdom is now the eighth-biggest Zelda game in the franchise's history in the UK, bearing Skyward Sword and The Wind Waker.

"In the UK, and after just two days, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is already the eighth biggest Zelda game of all time", Dring wrote on Twitter. "It's already outsold Skyward Sword, The Wind Waker, and A Link Between Worlds. This is based on boxed sales alone."

As far as lifetime revenue goes, the sequel is only being bested by Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess. Impressive numbers for sure, especially considering that the title has only been out for a few days. On Twitter, Dring writes that Tears of the Kingdom is the biggest Switch release in the UK to date when looking at revenue, thereby beating Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Another interesting tidbit is that Breath of the Wild sales in the UK have also been up week-on-week and has now claimed the 8th spot.

Nintendo's sequel isn't only the biggest Zelda launch in the UK to date, it also surpassed boxed sales of Hogwarts Legacy - a multiplatform game that launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S (and recently PS4 and Xbox One as well). It's good to note, however, that Hogwarts benefitted greatly from digital sales, and these sales figures only include boxed sales numbers. "It is comfortably the biggest boxed game release of the year, with sales almost a third bigger than Hogwarts Legacy", Dring explains on Twitter. "It's likely Hogwarts had a bigger digital launch than Zelda, but we won't know as Nintendo doesn't share digital data."

It will be interesting to see how the game has been performing in other regions, including Europe and the US. We'll update you as soon as more information about Tears of the Kingdom comes in. Haven't bought the game yet? Be sure to read our launch review here.
