I have been using WhatsApp for video calling for as long as I can remember and while I primarily use it on my phone, I never really felt that the app could use a feature that would let me share my screen with others. Such a feature always made sense to me on desktop apps like Skype, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, but the feature is now coming to the Meta-owned platform, as the company has started rolling it out to some users who are running the beta.
Sharing screen on WhatsApp is a good feature for anyone who wants help from their tech-savvy friends with smartphone problems
Based on the information received from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is now rolling out a feature that lets you share your screen when you are on a video call. Doing so will show you a prompt asking you to let the app start recording or broadcasting, and once that is done, you will be able to share the screen.
Now, for those wondering, sharing the screen will mean that WhatsApp is going to have access to everything that is visible on your screen. The prompt reads the following,
“WhatsApp will have access to all of the information that is visible on your screen or played from your device while recording or casting. This includes information such as passwords, payment details, photos, messages, and audio that you play."
This means that if you are going ahead and sharing screen, you are going to have to be careful because we really don't want anyone to be in an instance where you might end up compromising sensitive data on your phone.
For those wondering, the screen recording feature is rolling out to WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.23.11.19. All you have to do to enable the feature is just video call someone and tap the new button that you can find in the bottom right corner.
WhatsApp might be slow when it comes to bringing new features, but it definitely is a good sign that the company is actively working on perfecting the features that it does bring. We have seen the app get numerous features over the past couple of months ranging from the ability to edit messages as well as having multi-phone support, and hopefully, there are a lot of new features that are coming in the future.
