Following the successful implementation of his DLSS 3 mod in Elden Ring, I told PureDark that it would be great if he could work on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor next.
Respawn Entertainment's title received acclaim for its story and combat, but also a lot of criticism for its performance. On consoles, the game's performance mode cannot reach its target of 60 frames per second, adding pop-in and screen tearing issues. Users are therefore advised to choose the Quality Mode, which comes with a 30FPS cap.
On PC, the situation is even more dire as noted by several pre-release reviews, where Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was seen performing well below expectations at all tiers (high-end, medium, and low-end). The day-one patch didn't significantly improve the performance; Digital Foundry's Alexander Battaglia posted a video review over the weekend where he called the game possibly the worst triple-A PC port released thus far in 2023 and comparing it unfavorably to the already disappointing PC optimization of its predecessor, 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
For its part, Respawn Entertainment had no choice but to acknowledge all the negative reports on performance, which also translates into a very low 52% 'Mixed' user rating on Steam. The developer said they're committed to fixing those issues, but they'll require testing (and, therefore, time) to avoid introducing new problems.
Meanwhile, modder PureDark is once again coming to the rescue of GeForce RTX 40 owners with his DLSS 3 mod. The brief video test below shows that Frame Generation can more than double the game's frame rate. The video is titled 'imperfect implementation' because the modder noted issues with artifacts, but here, he was testing DLSS Frame Generation on top of the game's built-in AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.
However, as we already know, it is possible to implement DLSS 2 (Super Resolution) in place of FSR 2 and vice-versa. In a comment reply on YouTube, PureDark said he has now figured out how to do that, so the next step should be combining Super Resolution and Frame Generation in a new version of this DLSS 3 mod for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Since DLSS Frame Generation was never meant to be used with FSR 2, the aforementioned artifacts could likely be resolved simply with this switch. Needless to say, I'll keep in touch with PureDark to stay up to date with his work on this new project. This will be the third DLSS 3 mod, following The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Elden Ring, though the latter hasn't been shared yet, so the timeline for the release of the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is also presently unclear.
