Memory manufacturers are expected to launch new 24 GB & 48 GB DDR5 SO-DIMM memory modules for notebooks, dramatically increasing capacities.
24 GB & 48 GB Non-Binary DDR5 Memory Modules Coming To Laptops Soon, Mushkin Shows Off 96 GB Redline Kit
The latest AMD and Intel desktop platforms have received support for non-binary 24 GB & 48 GB DDR5 memory modules for a while now. Intel was the first to offer this support followed by AMD this year. Now, DDR5 memory makers are prepping up their brand new SO-DIMM line of 24 GB & 48 GB kits for the laptop market.
Mushkin being one of the more prominent DDR5 memory makers has unveiled its own SO-DIMM DDR5 memory which is designed for laptops. The specific 96 GB "MRA5S480FGGD48GX2" kit offers up to 4800 (CL40) transfer speeds with voltages of 1.1V. These are two DIMMs so each is 48 GB in capacity.
Although the SO-DIMM standard is designed for laptops, there are several Mini PCs based on AMD & Intel hardware that also utilize the same memory standard and can benefit from such high DRAM capacities. Laptops usually include two DIMM slots so you can get up to 96 GB of memory whereas you were limited to just 64 GB previously. That's a 50% boost in capacities. But to enable support of high-capacity SO-DIMMs, the necessary firmware might be required.
Desktop platforms received a series of BIOS firmware to support 24 GB and 48 GB DIMMs and up to 192 GB capacities.
Though it looks like the vast majority of laptop makers will ditch SO-DIMM & go for the newer CAMM standard which has been designed by JEDEC and Dell as the next memory standard for laptops, offering up to 128 GB of capacities that can be upgraded easily since they use CAMM Compression connector which can also connect a secondary board with SO-DIMM slots if the memory makers want to go with a more traditional approach. This new design is expected to save costs and offers much higher reusability while making repairs easy.
