ASUS Slaps A 3-Slot ROG STRIX Cooler On NVIDIA’s 115W GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, Just As Big As RTX 4090 ROG STRIX

ASUS recently unveiled its GeForce RTX 4060 8 GB custom graphics cards and among them its the 3-slot ROG STRIX variant.

ASUS Puts A Massive RTX 4090 Cooler On A 115W NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 ROG STRIX Graphics Card

If over-spec was a picture, then the ASUS GeForce RTX 4060 ROG STRIX graphics card would fit as the perfect example. The graphics card is what you might expect, a flagship variant with the best cooling solution that ASUS has to offer, but is it really required to go this far?

The ASUS GeForce RTX 4060 ROG STRIX graphics card features the same AD107-400 GPU with 3072 cores as the reference variant. This is the same card that will be available in tiny and compact ITX variants but ASUS wants gamers to know that they are making a gigantic version of the card that's featuring a similar cooling solution as the one used on the top-of-the-line RTX 4090 graphics cards.

ASUS's ROG STRIX cooler for the GeForce RTX 4060 features a 3-slot design and has a massive dual-heatsink assembly interconnected by several heat pipes underneath its hood. The card also adopts a triple-fan layout and is powered by a single 8-pin connector. It comes in both OC & Non-overclock flavors but the standard variant retains the 115W TDP. Now the internal heatsink is definitely toned down to cut-down costs as using the same 4090 heatsink would mean that this card would cost a lot more than its MSRP.

But even with all the cost cuttings, the ASUS ROG STRIX remains a premium model and should cost around $100 US more than the reference pricing of $299 US. For that price, you'll be better off with the RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB graphics cards which start at $399 US. Also, the card is expected to run really cool and quiet so there's no significant advantage that you get from a triple-slot & triple-fan cooler design used by this variant over a reference design. ASUS highlights the following features for the card:

  • NVIDIA Ada Lovelace Streaming Multiprocessors: Up to 2X performance and power efficiency
  • 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3 vs. brute-force rendering
  • 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub to increase airflow through the cooling array.
  • 3.1-slot design: massive fin array optimized for airflow from the three Axial-tech fans.
  • Vented backplate works in tandem with upgraded Axial-tech fans to maximize heat dissipation
  • Digital power control with high-current power stages and 15K capacitors to fuel maximum performance
  • Auto-Extreme precision automated manufacturing for higher reliability
  • GPU Tweak III software provides intuitive performance tweaking, thermal controls, and system monitoring

A dual-slot and dual-fan variant should do the job just as well. Now there's obviously going to be a market for these cards and ASUS knows that's why they are making it but I wish we had seen more unique and compact design approaches this gen as NVIDIA's Ada GPUs run really efficient and cool.
