Alongside the new iPhone 15 series, Apple will see fit to announce the new Apple Watch Series 9. While there are no design changes expected this year around, watchOS 10 will be the biggest update for the wearable since the launch of the original Apple Watch. It is now being reported that the Apple Watch Series 9 will come with an upgraded S9 chip which will be based on the A15 Bionic for enhanced performance. This could mean that the S9 chip will be fabricated on a 5nm process. Scroll down to read more details on what you should expect.
Apple Watch Series 9 could feature an upgraded S9 chip based A15 Bionic fabricated on a 5nm process
The information was shared by analyst Mark Gurman in the new Discord channel for the subscribers of his Power On newsletter. If you are not familiar the Apple Watch Series 8 is powered by the S8 chip which is essentially the same processor from two years ago and introduced with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 6. While the company rebranded the S8 processor as a brand-new chip with little to no improvements, the performance is more or less the same as the S6 or S7 chip.
Gurman was asked if the S9 chip will be based on A15 Bionic and his answer was positive. The similarity between the A15 and S9 chip is the 5nm architecture which will bring upgraded performance capabilities and better battery life. On a wearable, battery life holds immense importance and the new S9 chip could bring enormous results to the table. In terms of performance, app launch times will be faster as the chip takes advantage of the new watchOS 10 features.
Apple is finally upgrading the chip with the Apple Watch Series 9 and it is more than a welcome addition. However, the company is moving towards the production of 3nm chips and the wearable could further benefit from it if Apple decides to use it over the 5nm chips. Nonetheless, it does make sense for Apple to stick to 5nm chips for the Apple Watch as it does not require a vast amount of power albeit efficiency is a different factor.
It remains to be seen how watchOS 10 would take advantage of the S9 chip's enhanced performance capabilities, While the final word rests with Apple, we could get a sneak peek at this year's WWDC 2023 event. This is all there is to it, folks. Would you upgrade to the Apple Watch Serie S9 chip based on its performance? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
