Samsung Hints At Future Exynos SoC Releases With Advanced AMD GPUs As It Renews Licensing Agreement With The Chipmaker

Samsung and AMD

Samsung did not have the best of launches with its Exynos 2200, which sports the first AMD RDNA2 GPU named the Xclipse 920, as it underwhelmed in both performance and efficiency. However, the Korean giant has announced that it will renew its partnership with the U.S. chipmaker, hinting at future Exynos SoCs of a flagship variant possibly getting treated to improved Xclipse GPUs.

Samsung and AMD have not announced which target market the next mobile GPU will be aimed at, but promises ‘console-like gameplay on mobile devices’

While there have been rumors in the past, which talked about Samsung’s invested efforts in Exynos chipset development, the latest announcement cements a belief that improved mobile GPUs will arrive in the future. Though Samsung and AMD have not given away critical information, Seogjun Lee, Executive Vice President of Application Processor Development at Samsung Electronics, says both companies intend to bring innovation to the mobile graphics department.

“Together with AMD, Samsung has been revolutionizing mobile graphics, including our recent collaboration that brought ray tracing capability to mobile processors for the first time in the industry. Drawing on our technological know-how in designing ultra-low-power solutions, we will continue to drive ongoing innovation in the mobile graphics space.”

The Exynos 2200 and its Xclipse 920 GPU sorely disappointed, but future iterations may resolve these shortcomings

Given the poor showing of the Exynos 2200, Samsung had little choice but to switch to a modified version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for its Galaxy S23 series. Unfortunately, the Exynos 2300 is not expected to be found in the Galaxy S24 either, as it may be just a tweaked version of the Tensor G3 that will be found in the upcoming Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The only difference here is that we might finally see the Tensor G3 sporting an AMD GPU instead of one from ARM.

Samsung’s renewed partnership with AMD may also give it the opportunity to develop its own custom mobile GPU while using licensed technology from the U.S. firm. One area where the Exynos 2200’s Xclipse 920 was shown to be better than others was in ray tracing, as it beat the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in certain tests that involved tasking the GPU.

Unfortunately, the overall results revealed that there is much work to be done, and hopefully, this renewed agreement materializes improved variations of Xclipse mobile graphics processors, so if everything pans out accordingly, we will see these units in future Exynos chipsets.
