Engineer Mods the AirPods to Look Like EarPods With Wires and USB-C

Apple AirPods With Wires and USB-C Mod

Before 2020, Apple shipped the iPhone with wired EarPods. The company transitioned in an attempt to reduce its carbon footprint. The company also launched its AirPods in 2016 which were the perfect replacement for the EarPods but came with a price. While truly wireless is the way forward for the industry, an engineer added wires to the AirPods along with USB-C. Scroll down to read more details on the modification and what you can expect.

Engineer adds wires and USB-C to AirPods but it can not be used with an iPhone

Ken Pillonel, a hardware prototyping consultant, modded the AirPods to bring wires and USB-C. The AirPods feature excellent sound quality and a minimal design but it comes with a drawback. The design of the wearable is great and handy but it is one of the least repairable products that Apple makes. iFixit gave a zero repairability score to the AirPods out of ten making it one of the most difficult products to breathe life into if it gets damaged. If the device runs into issues, it is basically useless and can not be fixed.

The engineer behind the project wants users to reevaluate their choice to own wireless earbuds. With the least repairable score, the AirPods are a disposable item than a long-term solution. For instance, it is almost impossible to replace the battery in the AirPods. In his latest modification, Pillonel shows the world's first AirPods with wires that connect to your phone via USB-C.

Wired AirPods with USB-C make sense because it would eliminate the need to charge the earbuds every time the battery is low. You can simply plug it into your Android phone or a tablet to listen to music or watch videos. However, the wired AirPods with USB-C would not be the perfect fit for an iPhone. This is because the iPhone does not house a USB-C port - yet!

With the launch of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, we are expecting major changes in terms of external design which includes the addition of the USB-C port.  Currently, if you wish to use wired earbuds with an iPhone, they should be compatible with the Lightning cable. You can check out the video below for more details.

This is not the first time the engineer has shown his modification skills. Previously, Pillonel added USB-C to the iPhone X, and AirPods Pro as well as a Lightning connector in a budget Android phone. We will keep you guys updated on the latest, so be sure to stick around, Let us know what you think about the AirPods with wires.
